    Default Crazy Quilt Advise

I bought the Crazy Quilt templates when they were the DD a few weeks back, and I need some advise as to which fabrics to use.

I've got a new niece or nephew arriving in August and I wanted to do a baby quilt. Since I don't know the gender yet, I was going to start off making one for my first niece (who is 15 months old) using the Fairy Frost: It's A Girl Thing, and then depending on what the gender is of #2, do the same quilt in either the pink or blue again.

I hate to buy a charm pack of this for the centers seeing as though I'll only need 12 of them. I'm going to do one that is 3 x 4 of 8" blocks with 1" sashing in between. I was going to use the jelly roll for the strips (I have NO scraps to use), but was thinking maybe I just pick a solid from the collection and use that as the centers as well as the sashing.

Any suggestions as to which color I should do the centers, sashing, and binding in? I was thinking maybe the Fairy Frost - Haze, and then use the Fairy Frost - Peony for the border (going to be a 2" border.

    Any thoughts?

Jess. your ideas are spot on as far as I could tell by peeking at them. I think those colors would be great and so soothing to a little one.

Hi Jess, I made a crazy quilt a couple of years ago.......with 8" blocks & 2" sashing. I'm wondering if you will have too much waste if you use a charm pack for the crazy blocks.....but I'm not sure...just a thought. If you have a few leftover charms that you aren't using...try a sample block & see what you think. You will have all different shapes and sizes pieced around the center piece & the charms may not be big enough. I used scraps and bought a few small pieces of yardage to cut from to complete my blocks.

That's my thoughts, so I was thinking of just getting one solid (yardage) to use for the centers, and then use the jelly roll for the outside of the centers. Then do what Jenny did in the tutorial and square it up to 8 1/2".

Jess, I hate to be the one to damper your plans, but I used the frost material for a table runner and other items at Christmas. The metallic fabric is beautiful and I enjoyed working with it. I used these charms from MSQ* https://www.missouriquiltco.com/shop...ter-charm-pack

The glitter fabrics are beautiful but they have a stiff quality and I don't think it would be a good selection for a baby quilt, only because they're not real soft. Just my opinion, but I hate to see you put everything together and find that it was scratchy and stiff for a baby.

I think the jelly rolls strips would work better also. Let us know what you decide on fabric or color choices.

Jess I have an idea for you. It's a Moda charm pack called From Bump to Baby. Very cute prints and great color combos. Take a look!

I checked out that Moda collection.... So cute! I was just looking for something that would grow with her.

I completely forgot I ordered a Fairy Frost charm pack for another project. Pulled it out and checked it... Didn't seem too scratchy.

I've got some time... So I may just keep searching.

Jess, your fabric may be just fine. The Frost I used had a lot of metallic on the surface and I had to be very careful even pressing it at a lower iron temperature, therefore my concern over using it for a baby. One charm square didn't seem too stiff, but when I sewed them together, the whole thing had a lot more stiffness than I expected.

Pin a bunch of your charms together and run your hand over them. If they're soft and have a nice drape, you can probably use them. I really like the colors in that line but it's hard to tell how much metallic is on them.
