I'm going to throw something out too. You don't have to start in the middle all the time. It will look more crazy it you off set them.

Ok, so maybe it's good I didnt buy anything for this quilt yet..... My mom told me not to make one. Guess her other grandma already made her like two and is working on the one for her "big girl bed" when she's ready for it.
My sister's MIL is nice, but she likes to beat me and my mom to the punch way too often. Part of me thinks she does it on purpose.![]()

So make the self binding baby pattern out of flannels for receiving blankets for bath time, or make burp cloths or bibs. The other grandma sounds a bit competitive! You are creative enough to beat her at her own game!
Your niece is only weeks younger than my little girl and if she is anything similar, she loves bags. Perhaps you could follow one of the tutorials to make her a little bag and applique her name on it. My little girl loves opening her brothers pencil case (it's a little pouch with a zipper on it) so you could make one of them too.
I'm sorry... came too late to give an advice plus you don't need it anymore!
Btw I don't understand why a kid can't receive more than one thing even if it's the same from different people... well that's just my opinion!
I like Bouse's idea, you could still make zippered pouches and made a few in different sizes to keep diapers and other things for the baby! How does that sound to you?
And use the crazy template to make a quilt for you or to make the fabric for the pouches!

(just like Asgard but DH came up with it and I love it/him)
How about flannel sheets for the crib or bassinet, flannel and minky burb cloths, quilted pad for the play yard, cloth buckets for supplies. I have a 9 month grandson and these items will get used a lot.
