Do not do too much cutting all at one time. It's hard on the wrists & arms. I can think of only 2 quilts that I cut all the pieces out first before I started sewing. That was the Freedom's Star and one of the Turning Twenty...Again quilts (in my albums). The Freedom's Star included log cabin blocks. I laid out all the pieces in the order they were to be sewn, which made it easy to sew the blocks together. I quite often cut & sew, laying out the blocks as I get them done. I like to cut my fabric in smaller sections (FQs or 1/2 yd.), so I don't have a lot of heavy yardage falling off the side of the cutting table. It's just easier to manage.

It depends on what kind of quilt I'm making. At the moment I'm making a D4P and I'm cutting out the 10" squares as I go along. I don't know how big this quilt is going to be.

I kind of an "all or nothing" - "black or white" type person so I jump right in and do all my cutting at once. Except usually for the borders and binding which I save for last. I've never done a test block but haven't had any major problems. One day it will probably bite me and I'll learn then. My favorite part of quilting (besides picking out the fabric) is piecing so I feel like I can reward myself to do just that After all the cutting is done. I'd hate to have to stop piecing and go back and cut more fabric. I buy the clear square craft containers (probably meant for scrapbooking) when they are on sale at Joanne's or Michaels. I store each project in one of those. If I buy a jelly roll or something on sale, I put it in the square container with the pattern, thread, and whatever else I might need when I can actually get to that project. Oh, and probably the most important - measure twice, cut once!

I don't think I necessarily have one way to cut a quilt. I really think it's probably better to start by cutting out units for each block in the quilt. Sewing them together, making sure there are no mistakes and that everything fits well. It's also nice to have a block made to follow as you make other blocks. I think this is especially important to do after the recent thread where some have wasted expensive fabric because instructions were printed incorrectly. I know it takes extra time but it may save lots of time and frustration if one doesn't do some test blocks first.

I'm working on Bonnie Hunter's "Grand Illusion" mystery quilt. I feel confident in her directions since she's making a quilt with them as she goes. I feel fairly confident that there will be no problem with the instructions. There are a lot of small patches in this particular quilt so I cut some, construct some, cut some, construct some. Mainly I do this to relieve the monotony. It also helps avoid sitting in one position for long periods of time. As I'm getting older I don't do well staying in one position for hours.

I'd also like to add that I miss my Shape-Cut Plus. It's in the Netherlands so I've been cutting the typical way and it's not nearly as accurate and a lot slower. I need to break down and buy a second one for the house here in CA. In my opinion, it's worth every penny. Gotta wait for a Joann online 50% off coupon.
