I just found out my quilt's instructions were wrong
I purchased the book "Quilts in Morocco" by Kaffe Fassett and have cut out most but not all of the pieces cut for the quilt "Cayenne". You can see it here. I don't know how to import the photo.
https://www.gloriouscolor.com/store-...p?cat=565&ID=3
I have just found out by sheer luck while browsing online that this pattern's directions were printed wrong. Unfortunately the error concerns some strips that I have already cut in fabric named "Flame Stripe" (it is the very zig zaggy one). The directions said to cut them 4 3/4ths inches wide. Now the correction says to cut them 5 inches wide. OOPS.
Now the "Flame Stripe" fabric strips are supposed to be pieced to "Pebble Mosaic" to make a block. The block's size was originally to be 9 inches square, now corrected to 9 1/2 inches square. These will then be trimmed to 8 1/2 inch squares.
My hopefully saving grace is that I have not cut the Pebble Mosaic fabric yet. Can I just cut it wider than even the stated correction? In other words, 5 1/4" wide to make up for the missing quarter inch of the Flame Stripe?

Oh I'm sorry this happened to you. I Think that your plan could work. I'm also wondering if when you square up loosing that inch if by leaving more red when squaring can you recoup the missing 1/4 inch. I would definitely try a test block before cutting too many. Good luck. I'm looking forward to seeing the quilt.

It's so frustrating when that happens! I sometimes forget to check the pattern designer's websites for errors.
It's hard to tell by the photo, but if you are piecing 2 fabrics together then cutting into a block, using a wider strip for one should work. The final assembly appears to be diagonal rows. So your final block size would have to end up same as your other blocks for it to line up.

Yes, both the pieced blocks and the solid blocks wind up at 8 1/2 inches square. I don't know why we cut them to 9 1/2 and then later to 8 1/2. But that is what the correction says to do. I have highlighted it in boldface type.
Here is the statement that refers to my pattern:
"As much as we try to be as perfect as possible in writing instructions, once in a while mistakes happen. Please take note of these corrections in the book, QUILTS IN MOROCCO.
Addendum
Unfortunately 2 errors have occurred in the publication:

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Cayenne Quilt on pages 123-125
Please follow the following directions in the sections indicated.
CUTTING OUT
Strips for Pieced Blocks
The strips are cut at 5in (12.75cm). The Flame Stripe GP134BR fabric is cut across the width. Fussy cut a total of 8 strips 5in (12.75cm) wide, 4 with dark purple zigzags and 4 with dusty purple zigzags. Try and cut each set so they are as closely matched as possible. The Pebble Mosaic BM42OR fabric is cut down the length of the fabric with the yellow pebbles at one side of each strip, cut 8 strips 5in x 40in (12.75cm x 101.5cm). You will get 7 strips from a 40in length of fabric so you will need 2 lengths to get the 8 strips. Reserve the remaining fabric which should be approx. 35in (89cm) wide for the binding.
MAKING THE BLOCKS
Use a ¼in (6mm) seam allowance throughout. Refer to the quilt assembly diagram and photograph for fabric placement. Make 8 strip sets from a strip of GP134BR and a strip of BM42OR. The yellow pebbles along the edge of the BM42OR should be furthest from the GP134BR fabric. From each strip set cut 4 squares 9½in x 9½in (24.25cm x 24.25cm) as shown in block cutting and assembly diagram a. Keep the squares sorted by zigzag colourway (dark purple and dusty purple).
Take 2 squares of the same colourway and lay them with the BM42OR fabric at the top. Cut the first square diagonally from top left to bottom right, the second square from top right to bottom left as shown in diagram b. Using the 4 cut triangles combine them as shown in diagram b to make 2 pieced squares as shown in diagrams c and d. In the dark purple colourway make 7 squares as shown in diagram c and 6 as shown in diagram d. In the dusty purple colourway make 6 squares as shown in diagram c and 7 as shown in diagram d. Keep 4 cut triangles to fill in the quilt sides.
Trim the pieced squares to 8½in (21.5cm) square using Template VV. It is ESSENTIAL that the marked seam lines on the template are aligned very carefully when trimming (there will considerably more to trim from 2 of the sides). Also trim the cut triangles using Template WW, aligning the marked seam line as before and stay stitch along the bias edge to stabilize."

I'd make one from scrap fabric and see if what you thought of works.

Re: I just found out my quilt's instructions were wrong
I found an error in a quilt kit pattern that was assembled from a design in a book. The kit also included the original book. I couldn't find an error posting on the artist's website nor anywhere else online to confirm what I was pretty sure I had discovered. So, I did some graphics showing what the book recommended and then did one with my "fix." Finished the quilt, and sure enough...my fix worked. So, I sent both graphics and an explanation to the quilt shop where I got it. Just for their information. We were in the shop this Christmas (it's a five-hour drive from where we live) and lo! My fix was copied and inserted in the kits still available for sale. I felt like I had really done a good deed.

You must be sick to your stomach over this. I sure hope you can make do with the ideas you have and won't have to purchase more fabrics. I sure would try the plan with some other leftover fabrics to see if a test block comes out right.
BTW this is a gorgeous pattern. Your quilt should be stunning.

Re: I just found out my quilt's instructions were wrong
I wrote to the etsy shop that I bought all the fabric from and the owner (Sylvi Sealy at sewcolorquilts) said that one lady had cut those strips just 5 days before the corrections came out and she had to cut everything else smaller, too. I feel more sorry for her as I don't think I'll have to shrink everything. That fabric cost me over $200 bucks as I bought enough to increase the quilt to queen-sized :P
I'll practice with some scrap fabric like you folks suggested! I am so relieved I haven't started sewing yet or I really would feel sick...

I think what you are proposing to do will work. Guess that is why I don't ever cut all my fabric before trying it out. It is frustrating to find mistakes but it happens. Like Midge said...try it out on some scrap fabrics and see what happens. Post pictures when you get your done.
