Default I'm on a roll: An aqua Singer 338

Can anyone tell me anything about the Singer 338- this one is beautiful aqua blue colour. I don't know much about it (like nothing really except that apparently it works) but for $20.00 I said I would take it from a picture on kajiji. Even if it doesn't work the colour will look nifty in my sewing room. Its like I used to collect shoes; now I've started on sewing machines.

Then I am going to pick up a 1947 Black Feather Weight as well this weekend. Again sight unseen but it is in working order. Maybe I'm crazy but both ladies I dealt with sounded so nice and I didn't want to lose the machines so I just said yes please hold them for me. The lovely lady said it is in very good condition and beautiful but she doesn't know how to send pictures. So I think its ok as she sounded very cute.

I hope I come back happy on Monday. I am trusting that they both will be keepers.

OMG, that is the Singer my mom had when I first learned to sew.

I have to say for some reason I hated that machine but there was nothing wrong with it at all. Maybe it was the cams, you have to change cams out to change stitches. You lift up that little section on the top of the machine to change the cams. It sewed through almost anything, held up to a 10 year old running it at full speed. Mom had one of those buttonhole attachments that made the best buttonholes.

You called it blue, but the one we had was more of a pale, minty type green.

DH has a Singer Featherweight that is part of his "dowry" . LOL ! I took it and had it serviced this December when I asked him when it had been cleaned and oiled last and he said "Cleaned and oiled ?" I haven't used it yet , but I plan to next quilt (for piecing).
He has used it to hem and mend with . It is a cute little thing ! Got an old treadle machine up in the storage garage that I need to
find a new home for. Other than the Amish , do you think anyone would use it ? Lord only knows how old it is , etc. Brought from Mom's 9 yrs ago and she couldn't tell me anything .(Alzheimer's) What do you all think ?

Most quilters or antique collectors would love to have a treadle machine in their home even if they never use it. I used to keep mine in the living room with an antique lamp on it. You will love the Featherweight. They are so much fun to sew with and they make such a beautiful stitch.

    Karen, I love your Singer!!

Nan, I hope your new machines work! I have a few old ones that definitely don't and a few that just might with the correct oiling and cleaning. Recently a friend gave me an old machine that was her Mom's. I had never heard of it - also an aqua color. No cabinet, just a hard cardboard type of carrier.

I haven't had a chance to really clean her up yet and this color isn't as accurate as in person. I love the rocket man look of it. I do think with a cleaning and a new cord it would work nicely.
Can't wait to see what happens; I am on pins and needles with you!

This is the picture on kajiji of the 338. I know you can't tell anything from a picture but I love the colour of this. I am using turquoise as an accent colour in my sewing room so even if it doesn't work it will be a great accent piece.

    Nan,

Congratulations on the finds! I hope they turn out to be great working machines. Now that you have a Featherweight you realize your attendance at the Featherweight Play Day is mandatory! We will be expecting you. Let me know your flight info and we will pick you up a the airport. LOL

PS: How would you explain a Featherweight to the airline? I always travel with me antique Singer? Wonder if they would let you put it in the overhead?

(If all the pieces fit perfectly, people will think it was made by a machine!) LOL

I recently saw a treadle machine in use and remembered using one in 7th grade; suddenly had a need for one. I received one as a b-day gift and purchased another I saw listed on Craigslist. Both needed the leather belt which my LQS had in stock for @ $11. Took both in and had them cleaned and oiled. Ismacs has a database listing where you can find when your machine(s) were manufactured. I hope you are pleasantly surprised at how popular they are.

Congrats on your new machines! I will be getting a featherweight at some point - I really can't justify it right now because I don't have the space; I'm trying to be good and not buy something if it will just sit in a box collecting dust somewhere
