    Default Math question

    Hi

I need help figurate if my stash fabric is enough for a quilt.

I want to make the binding tool star with the star block messuring 14"

    For that block I use
    4 4 1/2" squares and 4 5" squares and 12 1 1/2 " squares of the background fabric to make a 14" block

I have just order 15 fatquarters of mixed colors so that should be more then enough.
( I use 1 1/2" strips of the fatquarter fabric of ech color )

I have a pice of neutral colored fabric that is a little bit more than 2 yards.

My question is: Will this stash fabric be enough for a quilt ? aprox lap size or a bit bigger ?

    I am thinking 4 x 5 block setting maybe ?!

Can any one help me figure this out ?

    Confused Annika

The stash to make a quilt to help me cope,

I came up with slightly more than 3 yards of background needed for a 4x5 setting without any additional borders and with very careful cutting.

I considered the width of fabric to be 40-42" after selvedges are removed. A 5" wide strip across the width of fabric should yield the four 4 1/2" and four 5" squares needed for 1 block (and up to 4 of the 1 1/2" squares depending on width of fabric). For 20 blocks (4x5 setting), that would require 100" of fabric length. A 1 1/2" wide strip across the width of fabric should yield 27-28 of the small squares. For 20 blocks you need 240 small squares. If you can get four 1 1/2" squares at the end of each 5" strip that leaves 160 squares to be cut. 160 divided by 27 squares per strip = 6 strips. 6 x 1 1/2" = 9" of fabric length. 100" + 9" = 109" or 3.03 yards.

    Thank you Myrna!

It is so kind of you to help me with this.

    Do you think if I make a 3 x 4 setting , I could manage with the 2 yards fabric ?

Yes, I think you could get a 3x4 setting with 2 yards.
I considered the width of fabric to be 40-42" after selvedges are removed. A 5" wide strip across the width of fabric should yield the four 4 1/2" and four 5" squares needed for 1 block (and up to 4 of the 1 1/2" squares depending on width of fabric). For 12 blocks (3x4 setting), you'd need 60" of fabric length (5" x 12). You'd need 144 small squares. Those could all be cut from 6 strips. 6x1.5"=9". 60" + 9" = 69" or 1.92 yards. If you can cut some of the 1.5" squares at the end of the 5" strips, that will help too.
