Default Quilting foot for piecing or only quilting?

I don't have a quilting foot because I just quilt by hand and thought it was just for doing machine quilting. I piece my tops with my quarter inch foot. Just don't like changing presser feet all the time, I like to use one foot for everything. What's your opinion on this. I don't use specialty fabrics or minky, just regular old cotton. Have been wondering about this for awhile. Anything to improve the process and make me a better quilter. I also have a very basic machine (Brother). And yes fellow quilters I only have ONE sewing machine!

I don't think I understand your question. If you machine piece your quilt tops and then hand quilt them, all you would need would be the 1/4" foot that you say you use for piecing. If you are referring to the quilting/darning foot that rides above the surface of your fabric, that one shouldn't be used for piecing. If you intend to learn to free motion quilt (FMQ), then that's the foot you need. If you plan to do Stitch In The Ditch (SITD) quilting, you can do that with your regular straight stitching foot or a walking foot.

If I missed answering your question, let me know.

I also have just one machine.
Walking Foot is helpful when you are stitching several fabric layers. Looks like you may not need it, if you are hand quilting :-)

Some people like using the walking foot while piecing. You know how you should put the stretching part next to the feed dogs? Well, if both top and bottom are stretching (like a lot of seams) the walking foot will help to evenly feed the pieced fabric through.

Looks like Ebay has the best prices: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q...r+walking+foot

I can remember paying around $75 for a walking foot for an older Viking.

Most machines come with a walking foot. My last two did.
