I don't think I understand your question. If you machine piece your quilt tops and then hand quilt them, all you would need would be the 1/4" foot that you say you use for piecing. If you are referring to the quilting/darning foot that rides above the surface of your fabric, that one shouldn't be used for piecing. If you intend to learn to free motion quilt (FMQ), then that's the foot you need. If you plan to do Stitch In The Ditch (SITD) quilting, you can do that with your regular straight stitching foot or a walking foot.
