Re: Still new to quilting
Of course you can, many people do. My suggestion is don't start out with a king size right off the bat. Work your way up to it and learn what you and your machine can do.
Re: Still new to quilting
Trust Karen, I've seen her do it many times. LOL. She does it all the time. Many of the ladies here do. You can get a FMQ foot and you are off to the races.
Re: Still new to quilting
Yes you can :) I remember making with a friend a quilt for a friend's retirement and we made it from the beginning to the end with one of her regular machines! Took some time to machine quilt but we did it :)
Re: Still new to quilting
Of course you can. My only suggestion is to do straight line quilting to start instead of free motion quilting. Free motion quilting can take a while to learn. All you will need is a walking foot to quilt with. These can be bought for a reasonable price on either Amazon or Ebay for your Brother machine. I started with a few baby and lap quilts and either stitch in the ditch or just straight lines done on the diagonals of the quilt. You might want to try a spray baste to hold your layers together too. So much easier than pinning. Happy quilting and keep us posted on your progress. Don't be shy if you have any further questions. Re: Still new to quilting
I have this book and it's really great: From Marti Michell: Machine Quilting in Sections book
Also, you might want to think about making rag quilts: How to Make a Rag Quilt (Start to Finish Instructions)
There's also quilt as you go: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=quilt+as+you+go
Our ancestors did not have machines with big throat spaces and they made beautiful quilts.
Just don't stress.
Re: Still new to quilting
I do it with all my quilts. And everyone has given you some great advise. Do start with a "test block". Know your machine. AND a WALKING foot is a must have.
Good luck and have fun!! We are here to help you... and if you need some pictures to guide you along try taking a peek at my blog... link is in the signature line. "machine quilting" is the heading.
Re: Still new to quilting
I made 5 quilts on a very basic Brother machine before I got my Janome and a walking foot.
Re: Still new to quilting
My machine is 30 years old and I make quilts with it. I haven't done anything bigger than a throw size......but larger can be done too. Like Karen suggested....start off with smaller projects 1st.
Re: Still new to quilting
Sure you can. I do it all the time. I have never sent a quilt out to be quilted. I machine quilt way more than hand quilt anymore. There are a lot of great tuts out there about quilting on a home machine.
Re: Still new to quilting
Absolutely! My first three were done with a 1981 Singer. But I listened to HOW to check for an exact 1/4 seam, hello painters tape. And yes, later I bought a more modern machine, but that Singer will always remain here! She's a workhorse! Walking foot, oh yeah, get one if you don't already have one. Save the FMQ stuff for later, it won't take you long to get the wind under your wings thanks to Jenny, and a LOT of great folks here. :D
Re: Still new to quilting
You definitely can!!! I would bet money that most of us started out on a traditional "home" machine! I started off with a Janome Sewist 525S (which I still have!) and made my very first quilt on it!

Like others have said... start off small (think baby or throw sized) and work your way up once you are comfortable.
Can't wait to see what you create!

I have really enjoyed watching Leah Day's Free Motion Quilt Project tutorials on youtube. Here's the link:

That's because they quilted by hand like me. Many of those ladies didn't OWN a machine.
Re: Still new to quilting
Yes you can.
My machine has the smallest throat space on a domestic machine but I recently made my first quilt, start to finish, on it. The quilt turned out to be a full size (I intended for it to be a twin..oops) and I found it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.
A walking foot helps, but a good straight stitch is what you need most.
Re: Still new to quilting
Sure you can. Check out Leah Day's youtube videos. One of them is about setting up your machine and using it to quilt a large quilt. There is also a great class on craftsy.com with Ann Pederson.
Re: Still new to quilting
I make many quilt and all on my machine it's a Brother DZ500F it has a large throat so it's easy to stuff a big quilt in, my I suggests that you start in the middle and work your way out to avoid puckering, good luck and don't forget to breathe
Re: Still new to quilting
I do all of my own work on my Pfaff, it has a 11 inch throat, and I even did a full queen size quilt. It was a bit of a pull, but it worked.
Re: Still new to quilting
It took me a long time to master FMQ and I really had panic attacks when doing it on a quilt top that took forever to piece. Now I love it but one day I would love to send a top off so I can get those beautiful computerized stiches a long arm does.
