Most of my store bought table cloths have 4-6 inches, mostly 6........hopefully someone with more knowledge will be by soon.
My ex husband's Grandmother use to make them and they all had a 6 inch drop

I'm glad you posted this. I'm thinking of making one also. I can not find a table cloth to fit my table correctly.

Love this ! Have seen them and they are lovely!
I think I might make one and use our old table cloth that is the right size as my backing!
That way I know it will be the right size!!
Happy Quilting!
Thanks everyone for their quick responses That's why I love to sew everyone is so nice and helpful,
That is such a good idea. You know it sound so simple after you hear it. It's a keeper![]()
I have a large collection of vintage linens. I have used a few of the tablecloths for backings on small quilts. I love using unusual backings. I made a Log Cabin table topper a few years ago and used an old cotton rice bag for the backing. A picture of it is in one of my albums here.
I missed out on purchasing a tobacco sack quilt at an auction this past fall and have been kicking myself for that. It was old and the colors were subdued and drop dead gorgeous. It was wonderful and the backing was an old fabric also. It's a great idea for quilts.
