    Default QAYG Question

I made a QAYG quilt and used the method whereby you piece each individual block as normal then quilt each individual block onto a piece of batting. I joined the blocks without using a sashing. I pressed the seams open on the back so that they would lie flat. I came to the point of getting ready to attach the backing (as you would normally), and realized (too late) that because the seams are pressed open and the blocks were quilted using no sashing, the fabric from the front of the quilt, obviously, shows in those seams on the back. Not taking this into consideration, I had purchased a lighter colored backing fabric and when I laid it up against the back of the quilt, those seams showed through. Obviously, *that* is not going to do. I purchased another backing fabric that is a dark color and am going to use that. The darker color works fine because I used a layer cake for the top of the quilt and I chose one of the darker fabrics that's in the quilt to use for the backing. However, what if I'm working on a lighter colored quilt and all of the fabrics are lighter colored - how would I get around those colors showing through on the back if I'm going to use a lighter colored backing?

I like the QAYG method because I am a new quilter and quilting each block individually was much easier than maneuvering a large quilt through my machine. I'm able to do more quilting this way. The quilt top sewed together beautifully - everything went really well until I got to the backing part. I considered layering another piece of fabric in between the quilt top/batting layer and the backing, but thought that might be too bulky.

Has anybody done the QAYG method this way and how did they handle the backing piece?

    Thanks a bunch!

Sorry, I have never tried a QAYG. I'm sure somebody will chime in soon. Good luck!

The first class I took years ago was QAYG, but sadly that was long before my bad accident where I had a serious head injury and I can't remember how they went together. So, needless to say, I'm of no help!!

Try layering a piece of muslin and the lighter backing and see if the colors still show thru. I'm a little confused about your method. How are you attaching the backing to the quilted front if you aren't quilting through it? Are you tying it?

I'll be attaching the backing like you would normally, but just stitching in the ditch around each of the blocks. I did more complicated quilting inside each of the blocks when I quilted it to the batting, so the backing will be attached with just the stitching in the ditch. Make sense?

Makes perfect sense to me as I, too, have developed my own way of QAYG. I chose a patterned or darker backing and just ignored anything that showed through. I don't have a huge list of quilts to brag about, tho, and I don't remember any obvious "show throughs". I have another one partially pieced, in columns, and am ready to start the quilting. Good luck to both of us.

A friend & I made a QAYG log cabin quilt last fall ... seams between blocks pressed open. To make it extra warm, we added a thin 2nd batting, then the backing. 2nd batting made seams between blocks less noticeable. This would solve your show through problem, if you don't mind a thick quilt!

This was a gift for a coworker and she loved it.

I like this idea. I would like to 'quilt' myself, but am not comfortable with stuffing the quilt (even a lap size) all up in the throat of my machine....(I'll mention here that I'm not a very patient person....so that has something to do with it, I assume). I'm going to give this a try. Items I make for friends and family....they all LOVE LOVE because none of them sew at all, so they think I'm wonderful. I just smile and thank them. :-)

I never have made a QAYG quilt but have an idea but I just can't seem to make it work all the way in my head. What if you cut a strip of batting to lay over the flat part of the back of the blocks where you joined them. It will fill in that area with batting and cover the dark strips that you pressed open. Right? I can't figure out how to attach them but maybe somebody else can? Maybe it means you have to stitch each strip of batting by hand to the dark edges that are pressed open but it might be worth it in the end. Then you can use the fabric you bought for your quilt in the first place.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and ideas. It seems like there are dozens of ways to do QAYG. This one seemed the easiest as I didn't have to mess with sashing strips on either the top or the bottom. I just didn't account for the darker top fabric showing through. I just started quilting in September so the idea of trying to quilt a whole quilt through my machine seems pretty daunting - although I supposed I'll be doing it anyway when I attach the backing and stitch in the ditch around the blocks. That said, I would never have been able to do all of the fussier quilting I did to each block if I had waited to do it all at the same time. I really don't want to be sending quilts off to be long-armed - I would like the satisfaction of knowing I made the entire quilt from start to finish - besides the extra $$ it costs to have that service done! I think the bottom line is I'll have to take into consideration the colors of the fabrics I use when I do a QAYG quilt and hopefully it won't be an issue! Thanks again!
