A friend & I made a QAYG log cabin quilt last fall ... seams between blocks pressed open. To make it extra warm, we added a thin 2nd batting, then the backing. 2nd batting made seams between blocks less noticeable. This would solve your show through problem, if you don't mind a thick quilt!
