    Default Standard crib quilt size?

Dumb question of the day. What is the standard size for a crib quilt?

36" x 54"? Is this the size that the quilts/comforters are that come in the sets at stores?

I notice that prepackaged batting for crib size is 45" x 60".

Last baby quilt I did I asked the couple to measure the mattress and sides (for the drop).

Isn't crib size batting 36" by 45". Or maybe they label that size craft size. I will look at my supply.

I'm confused about crib size quilts as now they recommend nothing be in the bed with infants, just dress them warm and into the crib they go.

    I found this :

Mattresses sold in both the United States and Canada, crib mattress size may range between 27 5/8" to 28 5/8" wide and 51 3/4" to 53" in length.

Thanks all for the measurement advice.

I don't normally make quilts for cribs just because of the guidelines saying nothing should be in the crib. But a young woman who I have known since she was born, emailed and asked me to make a crib quilt for her. I asked if this was something for the floor so the baby could play, maybe thrown over a rocking chair or hung on the wall but all she said was she wanted one of "my" quilts for the crib to go with the colors she and her DH picked.

And, yeah, I know. Someone who doesn't quilt has not idea how much work is involved. But she is a sweet, loving person and I will enjoy making the quilt, to be used to snuggle the baby while she rocks him

Rivermom, isn't that why we make quilts in the first place?? So they will be loved and used? I know that is my reason.
I'm sitting here feeling the chill just thinking of nothing to cover the baby with. I LOVE my quilts and blankets and not to use one for a baby seems cruel.

Most people I have seen that buy or are gifted crib quilts use them as decoration on/in the crib. The babies often just go in bed with mom or in a bassinet in the same room as the parents for a while anyway. I love to see my baby quilts on the floor or couch in pictures when the baby is "hanging out" in the living room or during playtime.

I agree! I make all my quilts to be be used . . . a lot. I love seeing my quilts being loved on, dragged around and snuggled under.

Time sure has changed. When my babies were babies (24 and 25 years ago!), we used bumper pads and pretty comforters in the cribs. Now, all that is allowed in the crib is the baby.
