Straight Stitches with QAYG
I'm making a QAYG quilt where you begin with 10" squares of just the top fabric with the batting on the bottom. It uses mostly do straight stitches prior to adding applique'. My question is, do you use a regular foot to do this quilting or do you put on your walking foot? I have a Pfaff with IDT and my test with and without it had different issues, but neither was fully satisfactory. I also wondered if I needed to adjust my foot pressure.
I realize I could just keep using trial and error, but I'd love any advice before I use up all my patience.
Re: Straight Stitches with QAYG
I have a different machine (a brother) but prefer the walking foot for straight quilting stitches.
Re: Straight Stitches with QAYG
I've always use my walking foot when sewing a batting layer. It will make a consistent stitch without having issues further along in the process. (sliding of fabric and stitched in wrinkles). Another tip... start with a slightly larger square then trim after doing the quilting and before sewing the pieces together. (I call it my "squaring up" step)
Hope this helps.
Re: Straight Stitches with QAYG
Don't forget to lengthen your stitch. I like quilt with stitch length set to "3".

Oh! I had forgotten about that. Thanks!
Re: Straight Stitches with QAYG
Walking foot, yes please. Love QAYG.
I try to stitch end to end so I do not have to worry about burying the knots.

Question from a non- Pfaff IDT user. Do you use a walking foot in addition to IDT? I thought the point of IDT was even feeding all the time. Just asking.

It is! She could back up from the camera a bit, but i enjoyed her lessons.
Re: Straight Stitches with QAYG
I have done similar quilts. I would definitely use my walking foot.

No you don't use a walking foot with it ... the IDT is the equivalent (better!) than a walking foot. It can be moved out the way if you don't want to use it.

Re: Straight Stitches with QAYG
Thanks for sharing that. I would really like to try this technique.
Re: Straight Stitches with QAYG
Machines with IDT never need a walking foot.
Re: Straight Stitches with QAYG
Today I tried with IDT engaged AND lengthened the stitch length. I got much better results. Now I have practiced with a few more 10" squares I'm not going to use in the quilt and turned them into little zip bags (using Gourmet Quilter's technique). Having fun!! Thanks for all the advice.
