Default Adding appliquéd name to my quilt

So I want to add big block the letters going down this quilt. I would like to do it before I quilt so that my stitching around the appliqué does not show to the back. However, I would also like my quilting not to go through my letters on the front of the quilt. Any experienced advice?

When I did this one, I quilted from the backside. You have to be careful around the edges if your front is smaller than the back...it got caught a couple of times and folded over. It came out good though. It's been several years, but I think I just did a loopy meander on it.

    That's a fantastic idea!

If you do quilt from the back, how about pinning the corners so they don't fold under. I have had corners fold under and it was no fun picking out the stitches - one was flannel and stitches really get embedded in flannel!

Are you going to FMQ it - or exactly what? If you FMQ just don't go over the letters. If you SITD - it shouldn't be any problem. Guess I don't quite understand your quilting problem.

I agree with Kathy. If you are quilting it yourself, you have control over where you go.

I'm going to quilt straight lines every inch or so. each band is about 9 inches. I'm going to put this letters vertically down the "monster band" how do i keep from sewing through the letters, or so i see right through them. i don't want to have to bury that many lines of quilting...and i don't want my satin stitches to show through on the back of the quilt if i applique after quilting.
