Do any of you make labels on your embroidery machine or using lettering stitches on your sewing machine? I don't like doing mine using a pen, although I have in the past. Do you use a single layer of fabric or something under it like thin batting or more fabric for stability (on your regular machine).
Hope this makes sense and someone has an answer or other ways of making a nice label. Thanks.
I often machine embroider my labels . I usually use two layers of fabric when I do them that way. You can also use lettering on your machine. I would also use a double layer of fabric for stability. In a pinch I have used a permanent fabric marker on white fabric. The important thing is that they get a label. Sometimes I will have an extra block from my quilt that I can turn into the label.
I did all of mine this year on my embroidery machine.

I just used some leftover fabric from the backing and a piece of cut-away stabilizer. Used some srap fabric from the top to add a border around it and then hand-sewed them on.
Rosie I love those. That's the type of thing I want to practice when my sewing/embroidery machine comes next week. Oh man, so much to do and so few hrs (after you factor in my nap)!
My machine has one only alphabet, but I use it often for labelling, as I don't really trust any pen ink to last laundry and sun drying. I normally double the fabric. Another trick that I do -I hope I'm not saying something really stupid, as it works for me- is to use any kind of thin paper as stabilizer. I tape the fabric rectangle I'm going to embroider to the paper, and then stitch through both. Of course, there is a lot of paper tearing afterwards. I suppose I should use a real embroidery stabilizer, but so far I'm happy with the results. My labels are not very long texts: quilt's name, recipient (if any), my initials, place and year.

Rosie, What embroidery machine do you have? Also, how did you make the label on the emb machine? I have a Brother PE-770 and I bought this inexpensive program that allows me to cut and paste letters into a background - its not super easy - just want to know how others do this.
I also have the Brother PE770, although I am just starting to use it and do not have a special program for it. I have a MAC computer and some of the programs apparently don't work with a MAC I've been told. I honestly don't know enough about it yet so I was just going to use the alphabet on my Pfaff for the label that I need right now.
Thank you all for your input. I am going to try using two layers of fabric and see how it comes out. Maybe this year I will have time to figure out the embroidery machine.
I just looked at your blog. I have the totally wicked quilt, also. Love it but haven't put together yet. My perspective on this is....all the bad things that have happened, all anything evil or wicked or depressing is in the smoke that is coming from the witch. I find the concept of win and victory in that quilt. Of course nobody else does. Hehe my daughter looked at me like I had two heads or something. So much for insight. Congrats on "pearl".Quote:

Attachment 95996Attachment 95997 for these I use a cut away stablizer and matching material, lettering and label shapes on my machine, brother Quattro 2 and hand sew on.
I make mine on my Pfaff embroidery machine, after I have designed it in the 5D software. I use fabric that will at least coordinate with the quilt top. As for stabilizer I'll use usually a cutaway or else I'll use a fusible interfacing and tearaway. I belong (on the fringes at least) to a sub-group of the local guild who make a couple of quilts a year for special projects, and I make all the labels for them.

Attachment 96024 I use single layer fabric backed with stabiliser and use a font from my digitizer to transfer to my embroidery machine. I have plenty of fabric to then fold back behind the stitching but perhaps I should do as others do and stitch it double in the first place. I also prefer to angle it and stitch it to a corner and then it gets stitched again with the binding. I don't usually sign on the label as I do this as a signature on the front corner of the quilt - just a show off, me!

I've got a Viking Designer SE Limited Edition that I got for my birthday last month. I LOVE it! I was able to add the text to a graphic I got from Embroidery Library right on my machine. No external software required.
I prefer the corner labels too. Never thought about adding lace though, great idea!
I use 2 layers of muslin. I just write my labels with a regular household/school pencil. Then I hand stitch with a single strand of embroidery thread doing the backstitch which is very easy when watching TV. It turns out great. I topstitch around the edge of the label in cream thread then hand sew label to the back. It makes a noce homey finish.
