My machine has one only alphabet, but I use it often for labelling, as I don't really trust any pen ink to last laundry and sun drying. I normally double the fabric. Another trick that I do -I hope I'm not saying something really stupid, as it works for me- is to use any kind of thin paper as stabilizer. I tape the fabric rectangle I'm going to embroider to the paper, and then stitch through both. Of course, there is a lot of paper tearing afterwards. I suppose I should use a real embroidery stabilizer, but so far I'm happy with the results. My labels are not very long texts: quilt's name, recipient (if any), my initials, place and year.
