Making a "drop" side on a quilt
All the bed quilts I have made were fit to cover just the top of the bed, but I want to learn how to make the drop sides to make them prettier. I looked on youtube, but couldn't find anything, so am coming to the experts. Do I just sew the material to the edges on all 3 sides, I also have some lace that would love to put on a quilt,
Suggestions, please

I just measure the bed, including how far I want the drop on each side. Then make a many block as necessary for that size.

Some quilters add blocks and borders for the 'drop' to three sides (the two long sides and the bottom), but others add it to all four edges. I'm in the group that adds it to all four sides so in most cases I can switch the top and bottom ends around on the bed.

This is the same I do...just measure how large I want it, and then do the math backwards for block sizes

I just add additional blocks to make it hang as far down as I want it. Not very scientific I'm afraid.

Most of the time I add borders but some patterns its easy just to add more blocks.

Thank you all for the wonderful advice, if I choose not to add the drop as blocks, could I just cut the material and stitch to all four sides, although blocks do sound more "inviting"

Just curious, it sounds to me as if you don't want the drop to have batting? Is that right? Do you already have the top sewn together?

I think you may be talking about using borders for the drops and that is certainly acceptable. Some quilts have blocks part way down and the borders add enough to make a longer drop. Here's a link to a pic of one of those. Country Cottage Cotton Patchwork Quilt Bedding
Others have quite a bit of fabric/wide borders for drop. Look at Jacqueline on this page https://www.google.com/search?source...ilts+with+drop
Others are all block to edge like the My World Kelsey on above page. These are commercial ones but give you the look.
So you have the freedom to design it anyway you like. : ) They all look fine.

I will often do my 'drop' as a wide border. I will often do the top border about half the width as the two sides and the bottom.
