My solution [and it is not perfect in any way] is to make any HST and flying geese oversized then trim to the correct size for whatever pattern I am using. I spent part of yesterday patiently [?] trimming down 184 HST. It takes lots of extra time but saves me a little angst.
I also sew triangles with them facing up so I can see where the point is and sew my seam to the right of the X where the seam crosses.
