    Default 1/4 square triangles

    Hi Everyone

I am making the Chevron quilt, and need some advice. Instead of making it using layer cake, I want the chevron to be smaller..............Finished size of the 1/4 square triangle is 5 x 5, could you please tell me what size I need to make the main squares so that when I cut them into 4 they will be correct size. Jenny uses a layer cake, sews completely around the square then cuts into fourths to make her triangles.............unfortunately this leaves alot of waste for me.

    Thanks for your feedback

Awesome thank you sooooo much, when I did the layer cake method I had to much waste, (and have more then I will ever need now LOL so to make a 5 inch finished square I should cut 6 1/4 squares, so charm packs won't work either...........okay back to recutting all the layer cakes I made............thanks again Sylvia

Sewing two squares together around all four edges, then cutting on the diagonal both ways makes Half Square Triangles, not Quarter Square. You use half square for the Chevron pattern.

The name if the piece comes from how many triangles are in the finished piece, not how many pieces you get after you cut them.

Hopefully your half square triangles will be the correct size since the link is for quarter square triangles.

thank you all, I realize that Jenny uses layer cakes, but I wanted the chevron to be smaller and charm packs aren't big enough for what I want, I will try this method, was looking for a way to do it sewing on all 4 sides like she does and come out with 5 inch triangles ( using the cut into 4ths method she does)

Hi everyone, I finally figured this out, Jenny uses 10 inch squares and makes 2 HST out of 2 squares sewn together, what I wanted to do is to get 4 5 inch triangles (yes I stated wrong before - I thought because I wanted 4 triangles 5 inches each they were QST) lesson learned. What I found was that if I cut the layer cakes down to 8x8 then stitch all around the sides, cut into 4's I come up with 4 5 inch blocks, with little or no waste. Then the extra 2 inches left over I can either make a scrappy quilt or use as "piano keys" binding. Then there is no wasted material at all...........LOL should have paid more attention in Math class

That is a great tutorial. I have printed it to hang on my bulletin board. The chart will be referred to frequently. Thank you.
