I wish I had pictures to send you. It truly is a great method for those who want feathers and other quilt designs across their quilt top without having to deal with the weight and size of the quilt while doing the fmq.
I am always on the lookout for ways to do the FMQ and make it more manageable. This sounds almost like a quilt as you go. Almost. But I'm having a hard time picturing some of this. I would love to see you do a picture tutorial on this. Do you think the next time you teach this, you could take pictures so you could build a tutorial?

Jan, this sounds interesting....but as someone else mentioned I too am a visual learner. A youtube would be awesome, but a lot of work. Maybe next time you are putting one together you could just post a few pics as you go along and post for us? That would help me get this straight in my little pea brain!

I'm kinda liking this idea of FMQ the smaller blocks.
And I like the fact that the boo boos won't show up on the back.
I'm thinkin' I'm gonna try this!
    Thanx, Jan, for posting.
    (And video/pics would be awesome!)

This sounds like a brilliant idea. I'm so glad you posted it and I want to try it out. I, too, would love to SEE you do it because I'm a little slow sometimes to follow written directions, but your directions were quite detailed and clear.

I've done a variation of this, but think it's easier to attach the backing when you are doing the batting/top. Then you just have to attach the pieces together and you're done.

    Okay... I need clarification...

Are you doing a quilt as you go... block by block. OR are you putting the quilt top all together, and quilting it and then doing the same with your borders, and then adding the backing?

    I'm confused.

I just read through this again. I think she fancy FMQ quilts the individual sections, then sews them together, then bastes the backing on the whole thing, then does stitch in the ditch to attach the backing. I like this idea better than sewing together after the backing pieces are on.

I am the one who wrote the initial post. I just love this method. It works like a charm. I am quilting a fall quilt right now using this method. I have taught this method with marvelous results.

    Janbee,

    Thanks posting this option.

I have a large throat space, but lack "surrounding" flat space to support the quilt to FMQ. This seems to be an option that keeps the backing more intact then in pieces you have to sash.

To me the directions that were provided were very clear, but can you clear up one thing for me? After grading the batting and you are sewing the "blocks" back together what happens to the batting in the seam allowance? Do you press open?

    Thanks

Yes, using a hot iron and steam, press the seams between the sections you are joining open and flat. I, too, have a Crescendo with a large throat space, but it is so much easier and less tiring to just quilt sections. Even small quilts can get quite heavy and bulky. I have had frozen shoulders in the past and my shoulders get tired after handling heavy quilts so this is perfect for me. Bed size quilts are very manageable using this method. I just love it!!!
