What would you do
Bought a kit I have the top done except for putting on the borders I cut the boarders as long as the instructions said but they are a little to long would you measure the top middle and bottom take the average and cut the boarders that long and sew them on or just sew the length I cut and trim the ends to make it fit ?

I would take border and cut it the same as right down the center.... exactly.... and use that as my measurement. This works better for me than any other method.

The correct way to add borders is by measuring and adding an inch or so. I tend to just measure my side and cut my fabric and trim the leftover.

I always make my borders a few inches longer than the side it's going on and trim it after pressing my seams. This method has always worked for me.
I add borders one of two ways... add to longest sides first, and then the shorter. Or I add it log cabin style, putting on one side and going around each side clock- ways. (I like doing it that way for Square quilt tops)

I also make borders a little longer, press then trim. This way I know I won't be short when sewing the borders on the quilt.

I just learned this method and it has worked great. I laid my quilt top out on a bed and laid the border straight done the middle and used the quilt itself as the measurement. It took a tiny bit of easing to sew the border on , but the quilt was flat when it was done.

I too measure the middle and cut my borders that size.

Re: What would you do
It is not unusual for the measurements in the directions to be different than your final quilt measurements, this is because of variations in cutting and seams. Measuring the middle of the quilt for border length and width is the best way, but I have often sewn on longer borders and cut off the excess.

I also lay my strips down the center, then trim to match, then pin the two ends, then the center, then ease the rest in.
