Default Any experience out there with IKEA fabric

I was just looking on the ikea website to see if they sold material that matches a chair I have and noticed they sell a lot of fabrics and reasonable prices. Has anyone ever used the materials for quilting and what were they like?

Yes, I have! As a matter of fact, I've just returned home from an IKEA haul!

I buy the black and white Ditte as background fabrics. The black is sometimes a bit thick, but still very usable. Also, check every time you are there, I have been told that the quality might vary.

I don't have any long time experience though. Ask me again in a couple years!

The other fabrics are different qualities. Many of them are thicker, more deco fabrics. But some are ok to use for quilts. However, many of the prints are big, as in huuuge. So I wouldn't use them in quilts.

I have used Ikea fabrics, but never for quilting. As Cat77 says, they are mostly thick stuff with large prints. I've made courtains and cushions out of them, and am considering using some for totes, but they don't have the soft touch I would like for a quilt. The thinner type, that Ditte fabric she mentions, either black or white, is always sold out at my closest Ikea store.
The only Ikea fabric I'm using for quilts doesn't come from bolts: they have nice bed sheets and linen for a reasonable price. I even purchased a duvet cover for just 1,00 € from their sales bin (the items that have been exhibited in the shop). I can get two tween sized backings out of that.

Any fabric I have seen there is thicker than cotton. Might make a backing for an outdoor quilt. I especially like the Christmas tree panel you can hang on the wall!

Like the others here, I have used IKEA fabric, but not for quilting. It has made some great cushions, and is very sturdy fabric. It might make nice backing fabric, but you'd certainly need to machine quilt it.

Thanks very much for your responses. I think I'm going to check it out the next time I'm at Ikea. The closest store is about 2 hours from home so I only go ocassionally. I also discovered that here they don't sell fabrics on line.

I did not know they even sold it till about a year ago! It's in the section with the drapes and cushions here. And that is the type of fabric it is....curtains and cushions.

IKEA puts their old line of fabric on sale. I got lucky and bought a red and white fabric for $1.00 a yard. I have made totes, pillows and laundry bags. I bought a black and white line drawing print for $2.99 a yard. I'm going to make totes and give the little kids fabric markers and totes for Christmas. They can color their own tote.

I agree with the others - the fabric is quite thick and heavy, similar to denim, twill, and canvas, and the prints are very large scale. Not exactly appropriate for quilts, but great for seat covers, pillows, bags, totes, etc.
