Lorie, back when I was a young girl, I helped my grandmother make one. I spent a few weeks cutting out those clam shells and then would help her stitch them by hand. I may still have one of her tops that never made it to the quilting frame somewhere. I have been thinking about this design as well but must say that the memory of cutting all those does not make me smile one bit. Perhaps if there were die cuts, lol. But then, the tedium of stitching those would make me re think it.
I love the pattern and it is a stunning quilt when done. Just more work than I would ever consider at this point. Good luck!

That's funny, Karen! I agree with Sandy, I would do better pressing and then machine sew them on.
