Default Can I make my own jelly roll

    Jenny,
I was wondering , if I make my own jelly roll how long are my 2 1/2 in strips? I have some fat quarters and some yards of fabric.. most of my yards are 42 in wide and some are 44 in. I am needing to know so I can get to cutting .
    Thanks , Debbie aka... Sassydeb

    A Jelly roll has 40, 2 1/2 inch X 44 inch strips.

And they are usually comprised of all of the fabrics in a line. Except for Solid Jelly Rolls

I make my own all the time. You can make them with any fabric. It doesn't have to all be the same collection. If you use the FQs you're strips will only be 1/2 the length, but still usable in some patterns. If I need to fill in with a color and all I have is a FQ I will use it.

The June Tailor Shape Cut ruler is great for cutting your yardage into strips!

I made my own for my Jelly Roll Race quilt. I wanted the colors to be more randomly distributed, so I cut mine in different lengths. Some of them were from fat quarters and some were from full width yardage. And some of them were cut smaller just because I wanted a mixture. Worked just fine for JRR. My next jelly roll quilt will be one of the 3 dudes patterns and for that particular one, I think it will be more productive to cut full width. But, there are no rules. Do what feels good, and it'll be great. And don't forget to show it off here!

I have a Sew Easy Cutter /Ruler and it makes cutting strips so easy! A bit pricey but I am a klutz with a ruler and rotary cutter.
I also put a piece of that rubbery shelf liner on my mat and it really does help . Wonder how much is really used for shelves ?!
