I have seen a video where Leah day modifies a darning/ fm foot to stop it bouncing. Surely if these feet aren't supposed to bounce they would be made that way. Has anyone tried the modification and does it work. Thanks.

Hi Lilyjo, yes I tried modifying the darning foot and yes it does work! I bought an inexpensive darning foot like the one Leah shows in her video. Give it a try. :)
What is the purpose for doing this?
I bought one for a Viking machine which runs about 40 bucks. I was nervous to modify it, but tried it anyway. It works and I like the fact that it doesn't bounce around. Not only is it quieter, but it is easier for me to see my stitches because the foot is holding still.
Bubba I think the purpose is to stop the bouncing as jennysnn says, but that was what was confusing me. If it's better to not bounce why are the feet made that way?
Do you have a link handy?
I always wondered that too about the bouncing. I can see modifying to open the foot for better visual, but the bouncing thing has me stumped.
My only idea about why they might make the feet bounce is because they think that it might help the quilter move their work. Other then that, I've got nothing.
I think the bouncing is to hold the fabric more firmly on the stitch and then hop up to let you move the fabric easier. Remember this is happening VERY fast.

How to Modify Your Free Motion Foot - YouTube
I recently picked up a quilting foot that doesn't have to be modified. It doesn't hop. That's the way it's designed. And it works great. I think the things hop because that's the way they have always been and manufacturers just keep on doing what they're doing.
I have done this to my cheap plastic generic foot and it works just fine, gives me much better control.
I am not sure what sewing machine you have, but take a look at what Amazon UK has to offer, maybe one of these will fit without spending so much money to try the idea.

I've seen the same with embroidery feet. On the Pfaff 2170, they hop.The newer Creative line, they snap on like ordinary feet.
I borrowed newer foot and it worked on the 2170, but the size of the foot and where it came close to the hoop was the problem. No difference in Embroidery.
I think the only feet that need to use the needle bar are walking and rufflers. On machines with even feed feet, those built in feet don't hop - you use regular feet - at least the Pfaff does.
I modified a foot a la Leah Day - it does work except I had the wrong size rubber band.
The bouncing is for darning, I think. My FMQ foot that came with my Juki and the one that came with my janome don't bounce.
Thank you all for your replies and tips. Much appreciated.
