Nightowls can you help?
I'm using my walking foot and can't locate the 1/4 inch. I don't usually do my own bindings - when I do I do it the simple way- folding the backing up over the top. I've done a regular binding a couple times before but at least a year ago. I just sewed on a placemat binding using the outside of one side of the walking foot as a guide - thinking the 1/3 or so seam allowance would be ok. It's not. Gosh golly darn - you'd think I'd learn. Can anyone advise before I fall asleep in this chair. Thanks

Can't help with the walking foot question, but I do know that if you are that tired this is not going to work out tonight! Perhaps in the morning it will be obvious?
I quit for the evening when I had to think too hard about which direction to press seams

Do you have a purple thang? The squarish end is 1/4" and you could measure over with that.

So - just draw out the whole seam? I could use my Nancy Z. hem gauge I guess. But the binding is black and I don't have a white pen.
Hmm maybe i better ditch this and go to bed. It was the last moment I had to sew this week. But there will be another day. By then I'll be able to think it through. Thanks, Claire and Pat.

Re: Nightowls can you help?
Sometimes I use an index card to help find the 1/4". Those lines are 1/4" apart.
When I pull the backing around to the front, I like to use my stitch in the ditch foot. I place the metal guide next to the fold and adjust the needle slightly to the right of the fold and stitch away. It gives me a consistent distance from the folded edge.
I also use this for sewing the binding on too. I use my walking foot to sew it onto the back, then change to the stitch in the ditch foot to sew it down on the quilt top. I use 3" binding folded in half. This means when I fold it over to the top, the edge/fold is past the bulk of the binding on the back. And when I sew it down, on the back of the quilt it just looks like another line of quilting.
But, you sound really tired so sleep should be what you do first. Whenever I'm really tired I quit sewing/quilting. I really don't like ripping seams out.

There should be markings on your throatplate that show 1/4". Sometimes it's the edge of where the feed dogs come up out of the machine. If you find that marking, and keep focused on that instead of where the needle is sewing, you should get an accurate 1/4".

I have placed a segment of painter's tape (easy to remove) on the 1/4 measurement of the faceplate. It helps me line up the edge when using the walking foot.

If your needle can be moved to the right, measure 1/4" from the edge of your walking foot and move the needle to that position.
If your needle can't be moved, as mentioned above, use an index card, look and see where the 1/4" is on your walking foot and make a mark. Something like original liquid paper works. Line the edge of your quilt/binding at this mark.
