how big are charm pack squares??
I have these fabrics that I adore and I thought I would make a disappearing four patch...yes I just read another post and then watched Jenny's video. I wish I could order charm packs from M* but it's just too expensive to do that.
So I have these fabrics and some white.

Picked them up at Walmart and I have two "5 piece bundles" with each piece measuring 18 x 21.
Could I make a quilt out of that? using some white?

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
Charm squares are 5" on each side. You have 5 fat quarters in your bundle, and because of the size (18 x 21), you can get 12 charms from each piece; you'll also end up with some extra fabric. But if you're willing to work with smaller pieces, you could cut your charms at 4.5" each; then you'd come up with 16 (smaller) charms, and still some left over.
I think if you use some white strips for sashing, you could either do a falling charms or just a really simple 4- or 9- patch with sashing. Very cute fabrics!

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
Wendy I absolutely love you and every thread you start. But I had to giggle at your question about how big charm squares are. Have you just not been here long enough yet. Or you have been working so hard lately, the information flew out of your thoughts.
Anyway, I love fat quarters. They are my new best thing to buy. You get a good amount of fabric in a variety. Those colors are going to make an awesome quilt. Cant wait to see it.

I had to giggle too but glad Karen said it first. Take a little break and relax and veg out in front of the tv or something. :)

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
I'm always really shocked by how much you can make with charm packs! You will definitely be able to get a nice quilt with the two bundles - baby sized for sure! Remember my Flutterby quilt? That was only 6 fat quarters and a yard of fabric (not including binding).
How many charm packs does Jenny say for the Disappearing 4 Patch?

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
There are some ideas here about cutting up fat quarters so, maybe, suggesting different block constructions.:icon_beuj:

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
Instead of a D4P what about a D9P that makes it's own sashing. Just as cute and a little less work.

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
It seems the standard size is 5 inch squares. But, be careful when you buy precuts that they are actually 5 inches. I have seen them different sizes especially like on ebay or etsy where they cut them.
If you are cutting them yourself, you get to determine the size. Just remember, the smaller the charm the smaller the pieces are in the disappearing patterns.
I stuck with 5" when I did a window pane disappearing 9 patch. I got 12 out of each fat quarter. I also took my time and cut it so I would have a 3" X 21" strip of fabric. Those left over strips could make a nice scrappy border.

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
Would you all just quit picking on Wendy? She's got a wedding coming up . . .

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
If you are going to do the disappearing four patch you might be happier making your fat quarters into larger squares. Say 9" squares would waste little and be much easier to deal with. I would cut your four patch maybe 2" from the center instead of 1".
I made one with a layer cake and loved how it turned out. I can'r imagine making one with 5" squares.:(

That's a good idea. I don't think I would do 5'' squares either. That's the reason I mentioned the d9p with sashing. Get's rid of those little pieces.

Re: how big are charm pack squares??

You'd THINK I would know this by now eh? But in my defense, we can't buy charm packs here in Canada like y'all can south of the border...so I never work with them. SO y'all just back off! :icon_bah::icon_bah: (mostly you Karen...LOL!) I'm teasing of course...love you all! :icon_hug::icon_hug:
I really like the D9P...but might check out the other links. Need to get some more white!

Wendy, I was wondering where you went. You are too funny. Have fun shopping

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
In your defense, I have seen 6" squares being sold as charm squares.
I too recommend a D9P. It is my favorite pattern for charm packs.

Where? I rarely shop online so if you know a place close to me I'm all ears! LOL! I have seen a few here and there but MAN are they expensive. And usually in colours I'm not fond of.

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
In random LQS's around here I see them. I got a couple of Moda layer cakes and some charm packs in Saskatchewan. My LQS carries a pitiful sekection of Moda pre-cuts and no others except their own that they cut and I'm with you. Hate the colors, lol. I did find a Canadian online source that has a pretty large sekection and excellent prices but I haven't ordered (yet). I will PM you details. I have ordered online from the US - from M* on Freaky Friday and once from Fat Quarter Shop. The s/h and exchange kills me.

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
If you are making a d4p, I would not use anything smaller than 5". I have a d4p that I am quilting now, but took FOREVER to piece, because I am OCD about my seams matching and there are a lot of small seams to match. using 5"charms, a finished square comes out to 8.5". My quilt is twin size, so it took 77 finished squares plus a 6"border. with 5fat quarters and some yardage, you should be able to get a good wall hanging using a d4p pattern.

Re: how big are charm pack squares??
Wendy,
They are such cute charms you have there.
Re. charms in general, the things are addicting ... at least for me. Thankfully I have not a bunch of "extra" money for I'd surely be amassing a heapa bunch.
Now, I'm off to check to see IF you completed something after all the quit divas suggestions.
