Suggest a backing fabric...
I'm getting ready to buy backing fabric for a quilt I am working on. I can't settle. I want a cotton print, but so far I can't decide what type or color. My binding will be in the same tanish color seen on the edges.
Any suggestions? Online I typically shop MSQC, Hancocks of Paducah, Fabric.com, or Joanns.
Re: Suggest a backing fabric...
I'd go for a soft green, like the edge of the butterfly's wings (and you have green in some of the blocks). I usually look for small prints for backings, as they hide much better my kilting mistakes. But you are probably better skilled than I am.
Re: Suggest a backing fabric...
How about these nerdy birds? Or simple dots?
They might be a bit too playful (but very much on sale! :icon_razz:)
Another possibility would also be something like this, but I don't think the dark background would really match. I've seen one recently, I think it was on fabric.com during their 4th July sale, that was soft purple and pink flowers with green on cream, but I can't find it anymore.
Or you might go with butterflies.
I'm sure you'll find something to match the pretty blocks. I just wouldn't stay too light (white/cream), as these fabrics stain more quickly.
Re: Suggest a backing fabric...
I love your blocks, especially the embroidered designs. I bought that collection but haven't stitched them out yet. Yours turned out great! Since the theme is nature/green, I would go with a soft green print for the backing, although you can go with any soft color or print. I can't wait to see your finished quilt...it's going to be a beauty.
Re: Suggest a backing fabric...
How beautiful!
My first thought was pull a green out of the blocks and butterflies. :)
I also struggle with backing choices. I tend to lean towards a fabric from the line that I absolutely love but in your case I'd got with a compliment or a contrast. To soften it, maybe pull the gray/purple out of it. Personally I'm not a fan of that much green but backing is such a personal choice. Is it for you? Is it for a friend/family/co-worker? What are their tastes?
The quilt I'm working on now has a backing that I thought I'd never choose. But I posted a picture of the work in progress and the fabric choices on Facebook and left it up to them. Many friends chose one of the 4 solids colors and two family members with good eyes for color chose a striped fabric that was totally not my style. I had to step back and really look at it together. While it still goes against my personal palate it softens the busy front while completing the color scheme throughout.
Sorry for the lengthy reply but I thought you could benefit from a similar situation. :)
I hope you find the backing that best suits the needs of the quilt and makes you happy.
Keep us posted!
Tiffany

Have to reply again.
What about something from the Papillon line?

I have both lines in a layer cake. I just love butterflies!:icon_tup:

I like the idea of green for the back. Does anyone know of where I can purchase this fabric?

Willow Green Kaufman Fusions Coll. Tonal Cotton Quilt Fabric Blender 1/2 yd.
They sell by half a yard, says more than 10 available, so they have at least 5 yards. It's Willow instead of light, but it might work if you can't find the light green anywhere. I did find the light green in New Zealand but it's 19 dollars a yard.

Attachment 81633Ok, I didn't order the butterflies, but found this one for 3.99 / yard! I think it will work fine. Now I have to decide on a quilting pattern. I am thinking about using a verigated cream colored thread in some sort of a swirl pattern.

I like the swirls! (I must admit that in the small picture, I first thought it was Astroturf! New glasses may be in order. :) )

funny! If you open the picture full size the fabric has swirls on it. I think it will work great with the green embroidered swirls I am putting inthe corners of the quilt.
