Are you able to substitute a jelly roll for the 1 yd of fabric or would mess it up?

When I did mine I cut 2-1/2" strips so a jelly roll would work. Also, I sewed my charms one after the other onto the strip then cut on each side of the strip and then cut again in the middle of the charm.
