Pillow shams??
I have extra blocks and material that I want to make pillows or shams to match quilts. Which do you do and why? Do you use backing and batting, just backing or just the block? Or is there something else I don't know?

Re: Pillow shams??
I am in the midst of making some shams, they are some of the same fabrics used in the quilt but a different pattern. I recycled a mattress pad to back the pieced fabric and have quilted [partly] that. I will make a back with a zipper to attach the quilted front and will sew all around, right sides together then turn and sew a flange around the outside edges.

Re: Pillow shams??
I make pillow shams to match quilts, but I make them as I would a pillow case. Since they are not going to be slept on, I'm not worried about having a finished backing inside. I just piece together my left over pieces, add a back, sew like a pillow case and hem the opening.
Just something easy and fun... not really like professional pillow shams, but serves the same purpose. For my daughters, to match her pinwheel quilt in Vintage Modern. I added wide ribbon on the ends so she can tie them closed with a bow. She was doing Vintage Chic in her bedroom. She loves them. I like to use scraps also to make toss pillows to go on the bed with the quilt and shams.

Re: Pillow shams??
When I make shams, I use batting and backing and quilt them because I like my shams to have some body. Sometimes I just make pillowcases. It depends on how much fabric I have leftover.
