I did one with a big star in white and layer cake squares of Moda's Barcelona by Zen Chic fabric for my 17yr old. I like it, it was quick, but those big squares were hard to quilt - too much free space.

For my older sons birthday in December I have plans to use Jenny's Houndstooth tutorial. It will suit him!

I saw several on the Four Paws page that looked great for a guy and would not be too difficult. I have just started some crazy quilt blocks and liked the Not So Crazy....I think it was called. Lots of choices out there or guys now.

Also look at Surrounded on that same site. It stands out on that page to me.

I've found this one recently. It would be easy enough to recreate with different black and grey fabrics. Maybe add some interesting quilting. "Little Black Dress 2" might be the fabric line to choose.

I would definitely ask your grandson what colours he likes. Also show him different patterns that you would be able and willing to do and let him choose (or let him google it himself). You might be surprised by his choice!

I'm making a quilt for my grandson. He chose the Labyrinth pattern and blue batiks that look like the sea. Looks good.

I did the double slice pattern for quilts for my DH and my brother at Christmas. I used Trail's End for one and Catch of the Day for the other. Does your grandson have any specific hobbies/interests that would help you decide on fabric? I am currently looking for some duck/geese/hunting fabric for a quilt for one of my sons. I'm having a hard time finding something that I like.
I think a log cabin block is another good one for guys. There are so many variations to choose from.
