Default Dumb question about Double four patch

I know this should be easy to figure out. Just having one of those day's where my research skills aren't working.lol

If I have a solid square like about 6'' how wide do I make the two strips to match that? 3 1/4 ? Would that be the formula? I'm not sure what size I'm going to cut these turtles out yet.

Yep, half your square plus 1/4" seam allowance for each strip.

So you want the four patch to be exactly six inches square? Then I think two strips 3 1/4 each. When you sew the two strips together you'll lose a quarter inch of each strip to seam allowance & you'll get a six inch strip. If you cut that into 3 1/4 inch slices for four patches, you should end up with four patches that are six inches each. I think! But then with seams the finished size will be five & a half square when you sew the patches together.

I hope one of those quilty math experts pitches in!

Thanks so much! I need to fussy cut these turtles and I don't want to mess this up with all this yardage.

I read some where here to do the four patch first, and then cut your solid square. The turtles are sort of random sizes. The biggest one would fit in a 5'' square but it's sort of tight. I bought this cool brown tone on tone that looks like a turtle shell for the 'four' patch.

This is the first time I actually bought fabric with a plan instead of a whim. lol Well saying that charm pack would make a cute baby quilt doesn't count though. hee hee
