    Default Info for fabric

I just finished ''Jacobs ladder remix'' who is in the first issue of BLOCK. The yardage is not exact. I needed 2.5 yards of each instead of 1.75. I live in Quebec and I bought my fabric in N. Hampshire. I can not find my fabric here, and I need for binding and backing. Do you think it would be OK if my binding and backing would be in a print that is in the same range of colors as my blue? I need advice; and excuse my english, I always sepad and write in french.

First, your English is just fine, and much, much better than my French! Second, I do hope it is okay to use complimentary fabrics because that is what I do most of the time. If it is not okay, then I must be in big trouble with the quilt "police". I rarely buy my backing before I finish my quilt top, so my backing is often from a different line, and so far, no one has objected. It is your creation, after all, and you get to make the rules for your quilts. I hope you will show it to us when it is finished.

First, welcome to the forum! It's fine to use complimentary fabrics for your binding and backing. I've also done this with borders. I've used precuts for the main part of the quilt top, then pulled from my stash for the border, backing and binding.

Most of us would be in serious trouble if this was against "the rules." I rarely buy from the line for the backing and the binding. I frequently buy precuts when they are on sale and can't afford the rest at that time. I buy coordinating fabric or shop my stash when the top is done.

I almost always mix fabric lines. Sometimes I will take some small pieces of fabric with me to the store and match it up that way. Like with Kona solids. There are so many colors to choose from that it's easier to just put your fabric up next to it.

Solid fabrics or tone on tone fabrics are a good way to make your quilt bigger.

I usually don't buy my backing fabric until the top is done.

I agree with everyone above. Never buy the backing till my top is done.

I rarely know what I will be doing with my fabrics when I buy them, so after the top is done I go to the store and just hold it up to the bolts and see what will work best with it. Sometimes I get lucky and my LQS has something in the same line as a precut I used in the top, but if you local stores have a good supply of fabric designers and lines there will almost always be something that works.

I think a 2 color quilt would look great with a print binding and backing in complementary colors.
