Default Question about Jelly Roll 2

I would like to make the Jelly Roll 2 quilt......but am thinking of using less strips....like 30 instead of the 42. How would this change the size of the quilt? Any ideas? Thanks much for any help.

It will change the width, but not the length. It will end up being about 37-1/2" wide by 64" long.

One way to make a JRR quilt with fewer strips is to make it in two sections and to sew each section to fewer rows than the 32 rows. I made one that ended up about 40" wide by 48" long. I made the first section using 17 strips and sewed til it was 16 rows long (32"), then took 9 strips, sewed to 8 rows long(16"). They end up very similar in width, I just trimmed them so they were the same width, then sewed the sections together to make the 48" length, it was a litle wider than 42" wide.

Here's how you figure out the formula for calculating the number of strips and how they relate to width:

    # of strips x 40"( approximate WOF after seaming) divided by the number of rows you are sewing to ( remember in a JRR quilt your choices are 2,4, 8, 16 or 32) = how wide it will end up. The length is determined by multiplying the number of rows by 2.

To figure out how to make a certain size, reverse the formula. # of inches wide you want your quilt X number of rows, divide by WOF 40" = how many strips you need.

I have lots of calculations and ways to make all sizes of JRR quilts, look in my user notes under my profile. I have made two video series of tutorials on JRR quilts also-- links are in my user notes. Or check out Jean JellyRollQueen on YouTube.
