Quilting done...now what?
I have finished the quilting on my sisters wedding quilt. Now I'm wondering...i've been dragging it around and one night the darn cat slept on it when I sewed too late and forgot to put it away...sewing fatigued...we need a tutorial on that one! LOL!
anyway...there are some "spots" on it and I don't know what they are...none very big. What would you use to treat a spot when you have no idea what you are treating? They're not a huge deal and I don't think she will notice but I will of course.
Thx! xox
Re: Quilting done...now what?
Are you going to wash it? If so, they might just go away. I'd be nervous spot treating it, since you aren't sure what you're dealing with. Ask a couple of people if they can tell you anything "wrong" with it and see if they pick out the spots. If not...I'd just not worry about it.
Re: Quilting done...now what?
I've spot treated many quilts before throwing them in the wash (after I was finished quilting and before gifting). It's not been any problem. I wash every quilt before giving it to someone because I use starch when piecing and I prefer to have that all washed out.
Re: Quilting done...now what?
Wendy, never tried spot treating so I can't contribute there but, post a pi ture of yourquiltnow that it's done we'd love to see it. What a wonderful wedding gift for your sister.
Re: Quilting done...now what?
I always start with just plain cold water and a clean cloth. It usually works, if you are going to wash the quilt and you know the fabric won't run, I use Dawn dishwashing liquid on really tough spots. Good luck.
Re: Quilting done...now what?
I would wash it without spot treating first. Then examine VERY carefully before you allow it to dry. If the spots are still there I would then try "Grandmas Secret Spot Remover" Many reputable quilt shops sell this spot remover.
Re: Quilting done...now what?
I use a solid stick called stain begone, or shout stain stick on spots never had a problem with it.
Re: Quilting done...now what?
thanks everyone! Great ideas here. I will post a pic when it's all done for sure. Yes I absolutely have to wash it...I have two long haired cats! LOL!
Re: Quilting done...now what?
Did you use that binding tool? How did it work for you?
Re: Quilting done...now what?
Sometimes after you wash it is hard to find the spot you were looking at and it may still be there you just cannot find it. I have the safety pins with the plastic colors that I used for basting before I got my frame and I use those to pin where I want to check, they are easy to spot when the quilt comes out of the wash.
Re: Quilting done...now what?
The original blue Dawn dish washing detergent is one of the best pre-treatments for spots and stains. Use a small amount and work it with a soft cloth.

What a great tip Spudgrandma, thank you so much!
Re: Quilting done...now what?
I'm a big believer in hydrogen peroxide for organic stains. That said, not knowing what it is, I'd probably simply wash first and see what happens.
Re: Quilting done...now what?
I use the tide spot stick and it has worked really well for the white fabric. Not sure if I would use it on colours
