What are the sizes for twin, Double/Queen and King??? I have so much trouble with these. The Double is okay because that's the size of my bed but is it the same as the sheet size for a double??

Alana, While there are standard quilt measurements, it's a good idea to make a quilt that will fit your particular bed. There are several different mattress types that could cause measurements to vary, such as a mattress with a pillow top or one that is extra thick or thin. What I do is measure the length and width of my mattress. Next I measure how far I want my quilt to hang over the sides and bottom (this is called the drop measurement). Because I don't put my quilts over my pillows (I use shams on top of my quilts) I add the drop measurement to both sides (width measurement) and to the bottom ( length measurement). If you plan to tuck your pillows into your quilt, then add the drop measurement to the bottom (length) measurement again.

For example if your bed measures 70 inches long and 50 inches wide and your drop measurement is 15 inches (and you don't plan to tuck your pillows under the quilt): 70+15=85 (length) 50+30=80 (width). It is perfectly fine to add the drop measurement to the top and bottom of your length if you choose to. You can always turn the top several inches back when you make your bed, which is pretty if you use a nice backing fabric that coordinates. I hope this helped and didn't confuse you further.

Just remember there are no quilt police. Make your quilts in a size that pleases you. More and more lately I seem to make large square quilts, which I lay on my bed over another bed covering. Best of luck....Barb

Thank you, thank you Sandy....I'm so glad it's in inches too! Being a Canuck we only measure in centimetres and meters...drives me nuts and never could get the hand of it. So again Thank YOU!

Thanks. No problem understanding either. thanks for the tip on the length part. I would never have thought of that, but with a co-ordinating fabric it would look pretty folded back....oh the ideas are just crankin' away in this old head....

Sort of like the difference in shoe sizes and clothing sizes. It always amazed me that I wore a size 42 shoe . . .
