Default Table Runners vs pillow covers

When my daughter gave me a gorgeous quilt, it was too short to fit my bed by the length of the pillow area. So, I turned the quilt sideways so it would fit the sides to meet the underskirt of the bed, and then I made a 'table runner' that I used to add to cover my pillow. It is loose from the quilt itself, so easy for me to remove it if I'd like a nap. I am wondering HOW others make a quilt 'fit' if it is too short for your bed? I was quilt lucky to have enough of the fabric left of hers to be able to make this 'table cover' that I used in a totally different way.

I make tons of pillowcases for pillows. I have about 7-9 pillows on my bed, I feel like the Princess and the Pea when I get into bed! I prefer that look to a tucked in pillow.
