Hexagon quilt finish?
This is how far I've come with my mad project of making a hexagon charm quilt (charm = every hexagon is unique and from a different fabric than any other hexagon). It's long enough that I've started thinking about how to finish it... And I'm just not sure! At the moment I'm leaning towards making half hexagons in gray to make the edge even and then have the same gray as backing.
I would LOVE some input! Any ideas? :)
The quilt so far (I'm currently attaching the top two rows of flowers):

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
That is absolutely beautiful! I love all the colours and I admire the patience that you have to work with all of those small pieces. i agree with you ... I would use a grey - probably a medium to dark one - for the border and backing. I'm impressed!

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Wow, this looks beautiful! How long have you been working on it?

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Anna, this is gorgeous! I'm not experienced enough to give any advice on finishing, just wanted to tell you how beautiful this is. I also would like to know how long you have been working on this.

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Thanks peeps! About a year but only in front of the telly, at the cottage etc. A lot of the hexagons are made from scraps donated by or exchanged with friends here on the forum. :)

Wow , you are fast girl!
This is gorgeous! I think your idea with the border would work great!
My self is only 3 row attached on my quilt.
Show us the finished quilt when you are done!
Have a great day

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
hi Anna,
Your hexie quilt turns out great. How many hexies are in your quilt? The idea with a neutral grey border is "génial". I still have to sew some rows on my forgetmenothexiequilt. Wouldn't that be a great word for some scrabble player?
I'm awaiting pictures of your hexiequilt eagerly.

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
My daughter just finished her hexie top and is ready to sandwich. She added navy blue to even out the sides then cut edges straight and added a 3" border. I liked the idea of adding the border because it framed the hexies.
Your top is beautiful.

That is so beautiful. I'm not sure I'll ever have the patience to make one like it. Great job and the colors are great.

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Anna I've been waiting to see this and it's absolutely beautiful! No matter how you border it I think it will be amazing. I would personally try and keep the front unique and maybe try and use different grey fabrics for the half hexagons in the same color range. Although like I said no matter how you finish it off it will be amazing :)

That looks great, really stunning! Thanks for the idea. :)
I'm not sure how many hexagons are in my quilt, I think 1500ish? I'll count them, some day. :D

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
In awe. Congratulations!! Multi-fabric quilts are my favorite and this takes the cake!! What about a polka dot border? If you could find a hexi-polka dot pattern that could be interesting. The dots would have to be small enough to read solid at a distance but might give the look a little transition with all the fabric patterns in the quilt. I could stare at your quilt for hours. Very cool!!

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Now there's an idea! A hexagon polkadot? Hm hm hm. :)

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Anna, your quilt is/will be absolutely stunning!

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Beautiful. Grey would be pretty. A black border might make all of those hexies sparkle like jewels.

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Anna this is one of the most beautiful Projects I ever say. congratulations!

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Anna, your quilt is gorgeous! Reminds me of a watercolor painting. I'm in awe of your patience that it took to do all those hexies.

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Wow is right! I love how you arranged the colors. It reminded me of the Olympic fabric.
This is so pretty too

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Anna.........this is beautiful! I like the idea of the gray borders & backing. What about throwing in a few random clusters of hexi's on the back........the label for your quilt could also be a hexi.

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
I admire your patience, persistence and determination!!!! You have done a great job on this, Anna! I made a very small table runner for a very small table :) and outlined it in white with whole hexies and then trimmed half off to make even. Probably any light neutral color would work. Audition ones...you might be surprised with what you end up with. Way to go, Quilter!

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Thanks so much! You are all too kind. All I can see in it at the moment are the mistakes... The hexagons that are in the wrong place etc. Oh well. :)
I think auditioning different fabrics is a great idea! I'm definatly going to have some hexagons on the back as well, I still cut hexagon shaped holes in all fabric I buy lol (boy will that be a hard habit to kick!). I've been home sick all week and so has my youngest and let's just say we don't have the same taste in what to watch on the telly = lot's of time to sew hexagon rows together... (Once my fingers stopped hurting from the first high fever.) So next time I go to the local fabric store I just might have an almost finished top to bring with me! Sadly she dosn't have much in the way of solids but I will get a good idea of colour anyway I think.

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
I ended up ordering some steel gray fabric and it arrived today! It was a shade darker than I had imagined but it will work just great. I have a LOT of leftover hexagons so I'm contemplating making a border using some of them. I'll see. :) Now for finishing the quilt I'm working on (a bubble quilt/playmat) and get basting gray!

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Anna your quilt top looks great. I am still quite away from having my top done. But I am at the half way point I still need to make about 15 more flowers and then the cobblestones to connect the other half together. Looking forward to seeing your quilt when you are all done. Are you going to hand quilt?
-
Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
It's unbelievable. Simply stunning. I agree with the gray. It will be a neutral to the colors and make them pop even more.

Yes! I actually brought it along to the local quilt shop last week to have her show me how to do it but she said it's just sewing and I will manage beautifully. Hm. I'm not so sure lol. I guess I will keep adding gray hexies until I'm ready! :D

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
This is Beautiful!! You have put so much work into. I would take a ruler and cut the edges square and then put a binding on it. You said that you might apply a half grey hexs put onyour binding, I would just cut the side hexs in the middle then quilt and bind it.

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Wow truly amazed! I'm new to quilting but I sure hope some day I have the patience and talent to do something like that! Beautiful!

Re: Hexagon quilt finish?
Ty for the links Annika! I will make sure to have a look at them and practise before sticking any needles into my hexagons. :) I signed up for a one day class in May too! :D My first ever real life quilting class. It's at Fröken Flink in Västerås.
I know what you are saying Lynn but to be honest, I couldn't cut into my hexagons! It was my plan from the beginning but I found I just couldn't do it. So gray it is. :)
