quilting wall was i dreaming?

A while ago, i saw a Utube video with something the lady called a quilting wall. i knew/know about design walls, but this lady used hers to layer her quilts. She was able to press her backing fabric up on the wall, spray adhesive, add her wadding and then finally her quilt top. Does anyone know what she might have had on the wall to support the weight of three layers? i suffer from tiny cottage space problems, to the point where i have to go to my mother in laws to layer my things (a three hour drive)

My husband and i just made a deal (got to love deals) We are building him a new workshop and i am getting my sewing room totally redone just as i need it with cutting table an everything! Woot! So as you can imagine, i would like to make the most of this as i doubt such willingness to accomodate fabric etc will come around again very quickly lol. While i have him distracted designing a workshop i want to find out about this quilting wall and cash in :)

Any help, info, links that anyone knows of would be greatly appreciated because (naturally) i can't find the video on UTube again naturally. There are others about design walls, but not this one i saw. Thanks for help..............all these great minds together must be able to come up with what i need eh?

Wow...I've never seen a design wall or quilting wall that will hold all the layers of a quilt. I'm interested in knowing more!! I hope someone can help locate the video you're referring too!!

(I send most of my quilt tops out to a LAQ, but the few smaller ones I've had to layer, I've done in my driveway *hanging head in shame* )

I remember that video. I think she had placed the ceiling tiles on her wall, not 100% sure. They worked like corkboard that she could pin felt or an old sheet to, then add her fabrics. Let me see if I can find it.

Was it Patsy Thompson? I saw a video on her website where she spray basted her quilt on a wall. If you Google Patsy Thompson Designs and click on the Education tab on the home page, there are videos there including the one I saw.

MrsWindy...... i wish i could send mine out to be quilted for me but in the UK i havent found a service cheaper than £145 for a king sized quilt. i am making a king sized now and i am going to have to find a way to quilt it myself........somehow.............er.............. .......someway..............that needs to be a song! But just to do the layering on the wall is going to help me no end.....yayy ty all again

Daisy...I wasnt sure of the currency rate differences so I googled it. If I'm correct, 145 in your currency is 235 in mine....thats expensive!!
My LAQ charges $115 (71 for you) for a king size quilt, and thats custom, not just an all over design. I tried to FMQ on a small wall hanging, it was rough....I'd hate to have to do a king size quilt! Good Luck to you and be sure to post pictures when you're finished...we love pictures!! (even though I still havent set up a photo album)

hi Mary, yes its ever so expensive here, i think because it is so much less common, also i believe all the long arms here are imported from the US. We may be posh (some of us lol) but we dont have many posh quilting machines. My Aunty Lizzie taught me and the old english way is to spot quilt. Its like tying but with a double french knot. i am thinking of trying a combination of stitch in the ditch and spot. Have to say the spot does look lovely on the back of the quilt though if you use fairy thick embroidery thread in a contrasting colour.

I remember watching the video several months ago and before I had put up a small design wall; I too have limited space and since I really prefer working on tablerunners, baby quilts and wall hangings,the smaller wall is just fine. I had forgotten about Patsy's technique, just wish someone would come up with a non-aerosol basting product so you wouldn't need such a large area protected from the over-spray. I've tried using glue sticks on the fabric to batting, it worked fine but it was kind of hard to get the glue to spread on the batting without gumming up the glue stick with lots of batting fuzz. Chris

If you took a large piece of cardboard or posterboard and held it against the edge as a barrier as you sprayed, you might be able to get away with a smaller wall area. You'd just have to be careful what you laid it down on afterward.

Thanks, Ladies. I enjoyed watching Patsy Thompson's FMQ tutorials. The wall idea is great if you have a wall large enough. The tip I got that I absolutely love is the "moonlight" under the extension table for an automatic light box. What a fantastic idea and one less thing to store. I just need to see where to buy one of those lights. Home Depot or a lighting store would probably be the best place to look.

I got lost in the videos last night...great advice on FMQ! I'm going to get brave and try it again now that I have a better idea of how to manage the bigger projects. The design wall idea is great...I'll have to try that idea!

Rebecca...the lights can be found almost anywhere now, Walmart, CVS/Walgreens and even my local grocery store carries them in their household aisle. My machine came with an extension table...its just not clear, otherwise I'd be using it for a light box, too! (I hold a piece of paper up to my computer screen and trace applique patterns that way)

I do this with a temporary wall. I attached an old sheet onto a long board and hang this onto 2 nails near the ceiling in a spare bedroom. When I want to spray-baste I hang this sheet up and start in. When I'm done, the sheet can be washed, then re-attached to the board, rolled up and stuck under the bed. It's the solution that's worked for me. I just leave the nails in the wall because nobody notices them anyway.

I saw the video where the women spray basted on the wall. I'm sure it said she used the white ceiling tiles under her felt. I think I'm going to do that when i get a permanent sewing room so you can use pins if you are using more than one layer. Right now I've stapled a dollar store vinyl table cloth (fuzzy side out) to the wall. works great and only cost about $4.

Hey Divine Daisy, I recently converted my son's old bedroom into a quilt study and office and have made the quilt wall myself. It has turned out fantasitc. I got the idea of a quilting wall from Patsy Thompson Designs but altered it just a bit. Instead of ceiling tiles, I used two sheets of wall board insulation. you know the kind that comes in 4ftX8ft sheets. it is pink and sold at Home depot or Lowes. I measured my wall and cut the boards to fit my space. The sheets are easy to cut and are styrofoam so they are very light weight. I used liquid nail glue( comes in a tube you apply with a caulking gun) and glued the boards to my wall. Of couse you need to know they attach permanent to your wall so no changing minds once you apply:) I love it. When I am not using the wall to based my quilt together it makes for a great space to pin samples too or arrange quilt designs. I have to open windows when applying basting spray but it works fantastic. Pasty Thompson has a great video on this. PatsyThompsonDesigns.com. i have some frames covered in plywood on their way to which i will attach either the ceiling tiles or board insulation and (i hope) hey presto! The purpose of the frame is to make the wall modular so that i can hang them on the wall firmly but can also remove to store. This way i can cover the whole wall when i need to or a smaller area. My sewing room has to double as a guest bedroom, although (coughs) at the moment guests are being discouraged while i make my king sized quilt. i mean, my pieces, fabric, and 'stuff' are more important than guests who might want (gasp) me to stop sewing and do some cooking AND may want space to sleep! Dont you call agree? Priorities ladies........ priorities.

Mine at the moment are 'stay clear unless you are a) willing to take care of yourselves or b) sit and cut pieces, Its amazing how grown up children arriving for sunday lunch tail off when they have a template and cutter placed in their hands when they arrive. i do however take a break to feed the old man on occasions. Its amazing how men can whine if you let them get TOO hungry! ( did i mention that i have 320 dresdon blades to cut for this *** quilt?) and then theres the blocks and the rectangles an an an............. Who has time to do other things when there are blades to cut? Eh? Eh?
