Default New to Quilting...need help with Machine Quilting

Hello. I am new to sewing and quilting. I watched the MSQC tutorial on the baby quilt and loved it. So I started my own. I have the topper done but I am not sure how to do the actual quilting. When Jenny got to that part on the tutorial, she used her big quilting machine. Is there somewhere I can find a tutorial, video, something showing me how to use my sewing machine for it? I have a Brother with the quilting patterns and free form foot as well so I know I can do it, I just don't know how.

    Thanks!!!

Hi Andi, You really should take a class on that. You need some practice on a piece of material with a piece of backing and batting. That way you can get a feel of how your machine is going to react to quilting and how it moves through the process. I know I won't be machine quilting until I do. The other way of course is by hand. It's fun and relaxing. I took a class on that too. Loved it. Hugs, Jan L

I started quilting with just a walking foot and a straight lines. I do a lot of echoing the pattern and diagonals and really like the way they turn out. If you're specifically wanting to do free motion quilting, here's a link to a site that is devoted to FMQ. There are hundreds of patterns and she often gives a video tutorial for them. It's awesome...enjoy!

I bought a large scrap of fabric that looked like patchwork [hope you know what I mean] and just used any piece of fabric for the backing. First I practiced sewing in the ditch on one section and then tackled free motion stippling. For the first few quilts I only stitched in the ditch until I was brave enough to try my stippling on a quilt. Good luck!

    Hi Andi
I agree with everybody else that responded so far.....practice really is the magic word!!
you could even just draw some designs on paper, put an old needle in your machine, (no thread) & just practice following your lines. Sewing right on the paper.
SummerK's web site is one of the best I've ever come across. Here are a couple more you might like....careful tho....once you're bitten there's no going back

You Tube is another place to go for just about any tute that Jenny doesn't cover.

omg....I could go on & on...there are SO many great places to use up all your time

Have fun!!! That's the most important thing to remember!

If at first you DO succeed, try not to look so surprised.

Thank you all for the great advice! If I wasn't so far from MSQC, I would go there but I found a local quilt shop in NJ that does classes. Between that and the wonderful links, I think I'll be ok!

    Thank you all!!!

I read lots of blog and watched several various you-tube videos on machine quilting. Then, I jumped in feet first. I had some extra batting around and made lots of quilt sandwiches with scraps and practiced. Half the battle is being brave enough to think you can do it. Now, don't look closely at the stitches on these early quilts. The stitching isn't very straight and even, but it gets better each time I try it.
