I have a what feels like a dumb question about the disappearing 9 patch pattern. I want to make a quilt from this design but I want to use yardage instead of charm packs. Would you need 9 different fabrics to get the look?

Yes... or eight and a solid for your center like a cream, navy or black or beige. I used a Navy Batik for my centers.
I bought a half yard of each fabric and cut my own....
pat.
No rain....no rainbows!
So, half yard of 9 fabrics will make what size quilt top?

Sounds good.....So I should be safe making a baby quilt purchasing about 1/4 yard of 9 pieces. Hmmm, I guess that's another trip to the LQS! I have a collection of fabric that I wanted to use, but I think I only have about 6 different prints to match.

I would also recommend keeping a digital camera handy to take picture of the blocks before you sew them. I got mine square laid out, began sewing and somewhere between sewing the blocks and ironing, would end up changing the pattern from the original layout.
That's a good idea. I also have a design wall in the works. I have the 4x8 sheet of foamboard just sitting here in the sewing room. Waiting for me to make up my mind how I want it.

Same here. I do this to make HST's and last year I did it to make Bargello pattern quilt for my daughter...I had 15 different prints of pink...and bought 1/2 yard of each and it worked just fine. Works better to buy the yardage as pre cuts are usually not all even and just being off a tad can make it unusable so why stress yourself out..just get yardage! Even 1/4 yard could be enough or buy 9 different fat quarters. I think you can get more squares out of a fat quarter than 1/4 yard due to the shape of the piece
Good tip...and you can get them at your LQS for just a couple bucks!
