I have seen some beautiful quilts that only used 3 fabrics.

You can make your charms any size you want. People usually use 5" squares because that's the size in a charm pack.

1/4 yard is only 9" wide. 1/3 yard is 12" wide. You can get 12 five inch charms from a fat quarter, but only eight from 1/4 yard.

Look at these quilts for ideas: https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...46.jHeA2jA1Uik

I agree with Vonnie but, in the end, it's your choice as to how many fabrics you use. I was also going to suggest that google page. It will give you plenty of ideas and help sort out which you prefer. Good luck with the quilt.

Works better to buy the yardage as pre cuts are usually not all even and just being off a tad can make it unusable so why stress yourself out..just get yardage! Even 1/4 yard could be enough or buy 9 different fat quarters. I think you can get more squares out of a fat quarter than 1/4 yard due to the shape of the piece

That's a really good tip... Thanks..

When I made the D9P, I used fabric from both FQs & yardage I had in my stash. I cut my 5" wide lengths from the long ways of the FQ. I strip pieced my quilt. It's faster & easier. You just don't have as much versatility in placement. If you want certain colors/fabrics for a specific layout, you probably will need to cut the individual 5" squares. JCY

I bought yardage and cut my own as well. And yes you will still need 9 to get the effect. I didn't follow the layout the same on one of the ones I did, and the colors were not really me, but the recipient loved the colors and fabrics.

If you're making your D9P in a scrappy look, you can keep yourself organized and sew the blocks together without the problem of turning them if you remember to check the position of the smallest square each time you begin to sew the blocks together. Also, remember to press your seams to one side for all the even number rows and the opposite side for odd numbered rows. Everything will go together very nicely and with minimal matching seams.

I did the D9P with only three fabrics. I already posted these photos under a different thread (so sorry for the repeat to those who have already seen these) but will re-post them here so you can see another example of what the D9P looks like with fewer fabrics. This is before the binding was put on. This quilt was made from yardage, not from layer cakes.
