Default Any fabric for rag quilt .

I know flannel or brushed cotton makes a softer rag quilt...but would any quilting cotton work and would it still be quite soft once it was washed and ragged?

I've just three denim ones so far and the turned out nice...so I thought I'd go for cotton with batting squares instead for a couple..

    Cheers

Yes, quilters cotton works well for a rag quilt. Just remember to allow a half inch seam for the rag part.

Yes, cotton will work but your fringe will be thinner.
