Default Lets discuss snap-on feet designed for another brand machine

So I have several machines that can use snap-on feet. I went to a LQS to get a 1/4 inch foot (with guide) for my Brother and another foot my Elna. I get them both home and they both use the same adapter - and that adapter is the same on both machines.

When I compared them the Brother foot only has a small circular opening directly in the center for the needle. But the Janome (for the Elna) opening is more horizontal and would allow me to position the needle more toward the guide. I like this one better because when I do mini piecing 1/4 inch is too large and repositioning would give me the 3/16 seam allowance I need.

So ... Any problem using snap-on feet made by different manufacturers if they do the job you want them to?

    TIA

I have low shank feet that fit both my old singer and my viking. They do sell generic feet that fit multiple machines. As long as you have the shank style right and it fits the same, you shouldn't have any problems.

I have a Pfaff, a Singer, and a Babylock and I can use the same feet on all three machines, and I do! It was just luck it worked out that way.

Even thought the 1/4 inch foot you mentioned only has a small hole, it is certainly large enough to shift the needle over to the right enough to make a scant 1/4 inch foot. I can't think of any time you'd want to shift one further than that. I didn't realize there were feet brand-specific in design. I only thought of low shank and high shank, but I am no expert on machine brands.

On my Bernina I use a Bernina adapter with a viking ankle and generic snap-on feet for the feet I don't use often. I have used my old Elna low shank on my Viking sapphire. You have to remove the ankle to make it work. Or I could use the generic low shank with the Bernina adapter. There's lots of options however, I recommend buying the proper foot for your machine if it's one you'll use often tho.

My Viking dealer sold me a $3 adaptor that fits on my singer and allows me to use all my Viking feet on my Singer. So I don't have to buy multiples of the same feet.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Because you all shared your experiences, I felt more comfortable with using the Janome foot on my Brother. Tried it and it works great. Will save me a bunch of time making my minis because I won't have to go back and trim the seam allowances. Now to return the $26 foot I don't need! Hooray - more $ for fabric.

I had an Elna for a long time, and all my Elna feet fit on the Janome I bought when we lived in Australia. I was able to use those same feet when I upgraded my Elna to a Brother. So, to be mathematical, Elna=Janome and Elna=Brother, therefore Janome=Brother, qed.

In other words, go for it.

As long as the feet go on your machine and you can use them without damaging your machine, go for it.
