Hi Megan, not sure what pattern to suggest but it would be pretty with a pale green solid added in somewhere..........I know I'm a big help!

Lovely fabric!
I'll be following this thread because I have a Vin du Jour Layer Cake sitting here and I have no idea what to do with it.

I want a more traditional look, and most of the layer cake patterns I've found are not cutting it for me.

Sampler blocks? Use same background fabrics for cohesiveness.

I've looked at this layer cake several times. I think it's pretty but I can't figure out a good pattern for it either so I never ordered it.

I think part of the problem in trying to decide on a pattern is the layer cake has some directional prints. If you can live with words being upside down or sideways, I would suggest double slice layer cake.

Which color do you like the best? Pink, purple or green? Get a solid in that color and then decide!!!

Very good points to consider! I know from experience in cutting bazillions 2.5" tumblers making sure the bugs were upright and not upside down or sideways.

You can make a Twister quilt if you have that ruler. You can make a large Apple Core, if you have that ruler. You can make a Double Slice, which doesn't require a special ruler. It is an easy and quick quilt, and turns out beautiful. Here is a link to a video of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=jxC-0T5lXw4

What about a big hourglass to show off that pretty material. I guess you would still have the upside down words to figure out.

Re: First Layer Cake I have purchased. Love this fabric, but what do I make with it?
I bought 2 pack of cake layers...my intent was to cut them in to 4, 5" squares (I am not a scrappy quilter and need more than just one of multiple prints) and then make HST's and then I'd have 8 squares of the same print. I pre wash everything so after I pre washed the cake layers...(I washed 4 print pieces 10x10)...3 of them shrunk...2 were now 9,1/2x9,1/2 inches, 1 was 93/4x9,3/4 inches and the other one was 10x10. Obviously I can't use them now to make HST's. I prefer all shrinking be done before I spend the time, effort and money making the quilts an then washing, only to take it out of the dry and have it all wrinkled looking, puckered and looking like it has been wadded up in the closet for a year! And in this case it would have been worse as I was using yardage for the contrasting square..and if I hadn't pre washed the cake layers...only the side of the HST made from the cake layer would have shrunk and the other side with the yardage would not have shrunk and it'd look stupid to have half wrinkled and half smooth. So I dont' know what I will do, other than just have them as scraps or make smaller squares to make smaller HST's.

This is one of my first layer cakes too! (the first was a berenstain bear one). I knew I wanted to make a quilt for my son's fiancee for Christmas, and I used this layer cake. I was working on it almost to the last moment, so didn't take a "proper" picture of it - I used the Urban Cabin pattern because I wanted big enough pieces for the fabric to "shine" - I also wanted a more modern looking quilt - this is the first time I've used only fabric from the entire line (other than the white sashing) - for the borders and the backing too. I ended up quilting simply - mostly quilt in the ditch and echo quilting - but I'm pleased with how it turned out. I ended up using only 25 squares of the layer cake, so I can create something else with the leftovers!

Re: First Layer Cake I have purchased. Love this fabric, but what do I make with it?
You could do almost any of the patterns that use a charm square with a layer cake instead - you might have to adjust some measurements (like if you do the disappearing 4 patch - I would cut a wider strip), but they would all look good in the larger size. I do love the double slice, but if some of it is directional, you might have to be careful with that.

With the hearts and love graphics, in the fabrics, what about a quilt with hearts as a block? I had fabric that looked very similar to this line and I made a Tula Pink design that has big hearts on it. It is basically a chevron quilt with one side of the chevron made into the top of the hearts by snowballing the corners. Here's the one I made, it came from a book called Sew Red for Women.

Wow Jean!!!! That's beautiful!!
I don't usually like that much pink but that is amazing. I think you changed my mind about that color.

You could sew the blocks together, add a scalloped white border with a white back and use it for a summer lap quilt. Or get more and make a larger quilt for your bed.

Re: First Layer Cake I have purchased. Love this fabric, but what do I make with it?
Mix it up with some matching solid colors & make either a Disappearing 9-Patch, or the Double Slice Layer Cake. JCY

Re: First Layer Cake I have purchased. Love this fabric, but what do I make with it?
Reading the responses.. I had a thought.. choose one or two of the colors you like the best and get solids of those 2 colors then you can make HST's or hourglass with them. Or log cabin or pinwheel or 9 patch. THose two extra colors aleviate the "stress" of not having enough of the prints... it kind of expands the options for patterns.
