buy layer cakes, jelly rolls, charm packs or fat quarter bundles? Do you ever buy a quilt kit?
I buy mostly precuts. I do get by the yard fabric to use for backing. I also buy some solid by the yards for my background for the tops. So I have a nice mix. But I have to add I LOVE precuts. Fat quarters are so easy to work with. And layer cakes are great for backing for quilt as you go projects. I have only purchased two or three quilt kits but have not completed one of them yet
Yes, yes, yes, no and yes!
Yes on charm packs, jelly rolls and layer cakes. Love those.
Yes, yes, yes, not yet but I'm open to the idea, and no.
I've never bought a kit because I always feel I can do it myself cheaper. I have bought some charm packs and quarters, but I usually like to buy fabric by the yard and cut my own. I usually buy more than I need and feed my stash. I can pretty much look at a picture anymore and figure out how to make the quilt, so I cheat and use the pic of kits to make my own.
yes, yes, yes, no and just one pillow kit. :)
Yes, yes and yes! Jeanne, it great seeing you back online!! Missed you....Barb
Yes to precut and no to kits.
yes to all precuts , no to kits.
Not a kit or jelly roll yet, yes to all of the others. I'm a new quilter also and am getting ready to make the Goodnight Irene quilt with charm packs.
Yes to all but the last one, I just haven't been able to bring myself to buy a kit. I think a lot of the cost is hidden when I make a quilt that I don't think about how much is really in there. For that reason I don't buy kits, I love not knowing how much I invest in each quilt!
My avi was a kit. I've used layer cakes, fat quarters, and jelly rolls, but not charm packs yet.
Yes to the layer cakes, charm packs and jelly rolls. The jellies are my favorite!! And they look so pretty on my shelf!
Yes to all - but very few kits. Fat Quarters are my favorite pre cut.
Yes to all...but with the kits I wait for it to go on sale for 75% off...just got a great deal on a Christmas quilt for next year for $15.00!!
Not to shabby...

Yes to all. I don't buy many kits, preferring to make my own. But I do buy them sometimes. I usually change a piece or two of the fabric. I'm a little hard to please when it comes to colors! The precuts, I love them! It makes life much easier.
Yes to all, but NO KITs.... I make up my own kits as I go. I am just a traditional block lover at heart and experiment with them using the precuts. The wildest I have ever gotten with a block is doing a twister wall hanging that Jean was showing us around Halloween time.
all of the above i have bought..... however I have only bought one kit because the quilt shop had one made up and i could really see that i could make it.
I have purchased a few layer cakes, several jelly rolls, several charm packs and several fat quarters. I would not buy a quilt kit (very expensive). Mostly what I have is abundance of yardage that was started with my Mother's fabric after she passed. Normally if I see fabric on sale....there is usually at least 1-2 yards purchased at that time....running our of room!!!!!
Yes,yes, yes, yes and yes. The last yes only two kits, one was called confetti made with Bali prints, and the other I haven't even opened!
I really prefer precuts and yardage now.
Yes to the first question and No to the second.
Yes to all of the above. I am in the minority on buying kits. I am not a very creative person. I can piece with the best of 'em, but when it comes to designing or choosing fabrics, I'm just not there. When I see one that a quilt shop has put together, then I buy the kit.
Yes to pre-cuts, no to kits. The kits always seem overpriced.
Yes to all of those options.
Thanks for mentioning using cake layers as backing fabric. I have some and intended to cut them to make 4, 5"squares to make HST's but they shrunk...so not sure what to do with them, but your suggestion to use as back fabric... I am working on making the back nice as the front and have seen many with a nice row or two of color on the back.. I could use these cake layers for that!
I have never bought a kit. I dont' follow written instructions well, not sure why. Just show me a picture and I can do the rest! But I think in this case.. I just haven't seen a kit I liked. Plus, they can be pricey and I can get yardage cheaper. THen I search through 2 books I have "501 Blocks" and "250 Blocks" and choose blocks I like!
I just bought a kit from Connecting Threads, the Red and White one that they brought back from last year. I really liked that quilt and waited to long last year and they sold out. So I snapped it up. I won't know till I get if it was a good deal or not, But Connecting Thread fabric is half of Moda's Prices, so….I'll see
When I first started quilting, I was really intrigued with the precuts and bought a few that were on sale that " I just had to have" and it didn't take me long to realize that I didn't have enough ideas or enough time or enough cash to buy all the precuts that "I just had to have." SO I just had to quit buying them. Now it's a rare occasion.
I love all precuts - gives me confidence to be "scrappy" yet know they go together for sure. Have not bought a kit.
I buy layer cakes, jelly rolls, and charm packs. They make it quick and easy to put together a quilt top. I have not bought any or fat quarter bundles but will probably in the future. I have never bought a quilt kit.
I have bought too much of everything but no kits.
Yes to everything except kits. I like to do my own design.
