Jean quilt top.... I'm stuck
So I made a quilt top out of old jeans I was going to get rid of. It made a nice top...however I'm not sure how to proceed. It's very thick.... Any suggestions on how to quilt it? Would a cotton backing be ok or is it too different in weight? Would you even use batting?

I did the same thing and just let the seams rag. I did make my seams 1/2" though. you might want to resew all the seams if you can to strengthen them and just call it done. Some will use a flannel back, but you will have to tie it. don't know how you would quilt through denim.
no batting, its already very heavy and warm.

This is very cool and I bet will be super cozy and durable! You could use a poly batting that has a lower loft and then tie the quilt instead of quilting it. Maybe a dark blue or dark gray yarn…knotting at the corner of each square or the corner of each block. You could even do a super lightweight flannel backing. You'll need a heavy needle and probably a thimble. A binding in a dark paisley would complement all the different denims. Ok, add this to my "would like to try this" list. What a super great quilt!!

To rag it you would have to take it apart and sew all your seams back together and leave enough for it to rag. You could use cotton to back it if you don't want to take it apart and stitch in the ditch. I wouldn't use batting unless you have extremely cold winters lol.

Your jean quilt looks really nice.
I did one about a year and a half ago. Made my seams 1/2" and pressed open. I then - just the top - turned upside down and stitched in a pretty thread 1/4" from seam on all seam allowances. This anchored the seams down. Then I backed with brown minkee. I spray basted it. Then I used my machine and stitched a decorative stitch in the center of each square. Then I used the backing for binding. Just trimmed to two inches all the way around quilt and folded the back over onto the top and tucked one inch under for a one inch hem. There are several tutorials on how to do the corners.
I have washed the quilt since then and I can't even tell it's been washed - it held up so well.
If you want, I can take a picture and see if I can post it. So far I have not posted a picture here.

You could back it with whatever you want. I would NOT take it apart to turn it into a rag quilt. I would stitch about 1/2" away from the seams so you wont be going over all that bulk. I think it is very nice just the way it is.

I would add a flannel backing and tie it. Have fun!

I would also do a flannel back, no batting. You could do diagonal quilting - one direction or both.

You could put flannel on the back, tie it, and rag just the edges...?
