Red face What is Modern Quilting? / Are you a Modern Quilter?

I would never consider myself a traditional quilter, but I do like many traditional styled quilts. Would I consider myself a what is termed a "Modern Quilter"? Well is does seem more to be my style, but I find myself caught in the middle someplace. I do not question my likes or dislikes, I also never think, Well, I would never do that....I just believe if I see something I like, I want try to see how I can work the technique to my advantage. I have found many fun, quick techniques and ideas for quilting, spins on the traditional style or ideas to speed up the pattern because of Modern quilters.
    Your Thoughts?
    Happy Quilting

I'm a modern quilter when it comes to using pre-cuts and new fabric instead of cutting up old clothing like my g'ma in Missouri did. But, I am traditional in my preference for older patterns or I guess I should say "traditional" patterns. I am impressed with what I call contemporary quilt design but I haven't the desire to do it. I'm all for making it quicker to see the final result like I said and MSQC has shown me fast ways to make traditional quilts!

I enjoy the look of traditional and modern. I'm doing a little of both. What is modern quilting? I would say it's the use of pre-cuts, strip quilting, tools to speed up the cutting process, free-motion quilting rather than hand-quilting, faster applique methods. Traditional quilts use patterns from the past to create the blocks. Eleanor Burns' quilts are more traditional designs using modern methods to speed up the process. The quilts you see in the Moda Bakeshop are modern quilts. The quilts are made with pre-cuts and the designers are coming up with new quilt designs that are more compatible using those precuts. A lot of the modern quilts have a scrappy look because of all the different fabrics found in the precuts. Traditional quilts often incorporate just a few different fabrics unless, of course, it's a scrap quilt.

I guess since I am new to quilting and teaching myself I am a modern quilter. I use pre-cuts, and take the "easy" way out as far as my project is concerned. I haven't ever seen an old fashioned or traditional quilt in person! So I guess until then, I will just be modern!?

I guess I am modern. I like to take the traditional patterns and use the more modern prints like Amy Butler.

I seem to use the modern methods a lot more, I'm not a patient person and I want quick results. And sometimes that works best for me. But I prefer the traditional looking quilts. Split personality anyone? lol.

I seem to favor the traditional patterns and applique. On the modern side I love the precuts and all the new gadgets that speed up the quilting process.
