I enjoy the look of traditional and modern. I'm doing a little of both. What is modern quilting? I would say it's the use of pre-cuts, strip quilting, tools to speed up the cutting process, free-motion quilting rather than hand-quilting, faster applique methods. Traditional quilts use patterns from the past to create the blocks. Eleanor Burns' quilts are more traditional designs using modern methods to speed up the process. The quilts you see in the Moda Bakeshop are modern quilts. The quilts are made with pre-cuts and the designers are coming up with new quilt designs that are more compatible using those precuts. A lot of the modern quilts have a scrappy look because of all the different fabrics found in the precuts. Traditional quilts often incorporate just a few different fabrics unless, of course, it's a scrap quilt.
